Starbucks Coffee Company CEO Howard Schultz issued a statement last week that respectfully requested its customers to “no longer bring firearms into our stores or outdoor seating areas — even in states where ‘open carry’ is permitted — unless they are authorized law enforcement personnel.” A survey of comments on the company’s website and Facebook page shows that gun owners are mostly unhappy about the request and will stop frequenting the stores, but a few are willing to cut Starbucks some slack and stay with the store.

What is Stand Your Ground Law? Understanding Legal Deadly Force

Now over 20 states have some form of no duty to retreat law. Misinterpreted as “shoot first” laws, many people do not understand that a Stand your Ground Law is simply an extension of the Castle Doctrine. It is not a shoot first ask questions later law. One cannot shoot simply because they are afraid. In all justified homicides, in the public domain and in your home, the person you shoot must have the ability to harm you, the opportunity, and have put you in jeopardy. You cannot legally apply unreasonable force.

We thought there was a run on firearms back in March. I say thought, because as robust as sales were in March, those figures do not hold a candle to today’s numbers. There was a huge run that started just before the election. It increased substantially after President Obama’s re-election. Numbers were still high right up to the Sandy Hook shootings when they went off the charts setting new records.
