The Safest Zone is Right Behind Your Gun: Guns Prevent Rape

Last week, Bob Beckel, The Five—Fox News—host asked, “When was the last time you heard about a rape on campus?” Actually, Bob, I heard about one two weeks ago. And that was only one. Statistically, a rape occurs every 21 hours on college campuses throughout the United States.

According to my research, out of 4,000-plus colleges and universities in America, only 25 allow concealed handguns on campus. Only six states allow licensed students to carry concealed while on school grounds. Since 2003, Colorado has been one of them. Recently, Colorado was the center of debate as to whether or not guns should be allowed on college campuses. However, it is not just since the Newtown shooting that Colorado has been fighting the guns-on-campus battle. In March 2012, the Colorado Supreme Court found the University of Colorado had been in violation of the state’s 2003 Concealed Carry Act.

Students at the University of Colorado did not even get to enjoy their freedom for an entire year. Last week, the Colorado House passed a bill that would ban weapons from state college campuses. In defense of the bill, Representative Joe Salizar said, “It’s why we have call boxes, it’s why we have safe zones, it’s why we have the whistles.” Safe zones didn’t help Amanda Collins. Amanda was a student at the University of Nevada in Reno in 2007 when she was raped. A concealed carry permit holder, Amanda wasn’t carrying that night. The University of Nevada at Reno is a safe zone. Guns aren’t allowed on campus. Knowing that she could lose her permit, get expelled from school and even face jail time, Amanda followed her school rules and left her gun at home. In an interview with the NRA’s Cam Edwards, Amanda said that safe zones “ensure the perpetrator that they’re going to be unmatched when they pick a victim.” A gun that night would have saved Amanda from being the victim of a brutal attack. The National Crime Survey—from 1979 to 1985—found victims that physically resisted an attempted rape with a weapon were far less likely to be raped. In fact, when women resisted an attempted rape with a gun, only 0.1 percent of victims report the rape being completed. The 2000 Journal of Criminal Justice report found women were four times more likely to escape an attempted rape uninjured when they used a gun in self-defense.

As for the case for guns on campus, the Students for Concealed Carry found that since Colorado Springs University allowed students to conceal carry there was a 90 percent drop in sexual assaults on campus.

There are over 207,000 sexual assault victims each year and 1 in 5 women attending college will be raped while in school. Colleges attempt to keep their students safe by suggesting ways to prevent rape. But, the steps you often read essentially tell young women they have no choice, penalize them for being independent, and make them believe they are at fault. For example, here are a few recommended steps to preventing rape:

  • Don’t walk alone
  • Say no strongly
  • Know your sexual limitations
  • Lie
  • Claim you have Aids
  • Don’t drink alcohol at all
  • Wear comfortable clothing

Or would you rather just be able to carry your gun? Biologically, women tend to be physically weaker than men due to men’s higher testosterone levels. Men have more lean muscle mass, generally making women the physically weaker sex, in turn making them more vulnerable to attack. Dr. Michael G. Conner writes, “Weight, shape, size, and anatomy are not political opinions, but rather tangible and easily measured.” Guns level the playing field.

Salizar said, “”Because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at.” Well, I do. I’d be shooting at the man just seconds away from hurting me.

Over 80 percent of rapes on and off campus go unreported. If you have been a victim of a sexual assault or attempted sexual assault, please report the incident to the police. Remember it is rape even if:

  • You know your attacker
  • You are under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • You did not physically resist

  1. I am in a criminal justice class focusing on violence against women and for one of my research papers am looking for statistics on rape and CCW. I would be very appreciative if I could get any information, preferably peer reviewed date, on this topic. If the writer of this article or any knowledgeable individuals could help out in any references it would go a long way in supporting gun rights in a very liberal establishment. Thank you in advance.

  2. Due to the incredibly brave and powerful testimony of Amanda Collins and others before the Colorado State Senate, this misguided bill died, so Colorado students will still be able to protect themselves on campus. The biggest reason the Democrats said they wanted to take away student rights is that it makes other students and faculty “uncomfortable”. Well, too bad – we don’t take away our other rights because the make some feel uncomfortable. The Democrats actually made our point for us – knowing that students are armed and can defend themselves is by itself a deterrent.

  3. Great comments John – I was talking with my wife just yesterday about this. It is interesing that the gunshot used to stop a criminal from raping or killing someone is used by gun control as a terrible thing, artifically adding to the gun control pro argument, when in reality exact the opposite is the case. In many of these cases, this single shot may solve many cases for the police. It is not too realistic to think a criminal who breaks into houses (even now named “home Invasions”) has only done it one time. And continuing break ins will most likely lead to someone being raped or killed, usually the home owner or his family who is home in the middle of the night asleep. Later, Larry

  4. One Sided Coins

News today is like one-sided coins, usually biased to promote agendas. We have to do something, NOW. News never talks about benefits on issues, only detriments. “If it bleeds it leads.”

Gun Control is a classic example. News reports crimes committed using guns, but not crimes prevented using guns. News never tells us that all crimes involve criminals, but not all crimes involve guns. Criminals are the common denominator in crimes, not guns. More Americans die from “blunt force trauma” than from gunshots.

Gun-Control advocates cannot explain why 20,000 gun laws haven’t prevented crimes, or why 21,000 laws will make a difference. The news never reports crime rate trends in England, Scotland and Australia after disarming their citizens. An Australian politician stated; “we are at a loss to explain increased crime rates.”

Ask yourself, why after eliminating private gun ownership is England arming Bobby’s? Simple, criminals kept their guns and Bobby’s know this. Disarming potential victims never prevents crime anywhere, and never will! Get GunFacts info!

  5. I’m sorry, but what exactly is a Safe Zone? Well the answer is quite simple! It is a zone that was created to protect, but unfortunately, only criminals are protected by them!
And on the subject of rape, how many are never reported, because of the pain and shame that has been bestowed on the victim!
Obviously, the media is more obsessed with gun violence than all of the other crimes, because it makes better news for them!
All I can say is “Shame on them and shame on our government, for putting their desire for power and ratings, before the safety of We the People”
This is why we need the 2nd Amendment!!

  6. Oh how our society has changed! Back in the mid/late 70’s while attending a university in Arkansas, one of the female basketball players was raped on campus. The majority of us guys that lived on campus had hunting rifles/shotguns in our cars or even stored in our dorm rooms with never an incident. When we heard of the rape, we formed an escort service and any female student that requested it, we escorted them around campus with a shouldered weapon, out in the open. Was never another rape and all other crime dropped to zero.

  7. Glenn is a mis-informed individual who replaces common sense with HIS opinions which are in no way based on actual facts. He has no problem with clouding the real issues at hand. Maybe one of Glenn’s close relatives with be the victim of an attack and it will wake him up

  8. Everyone has mentioned that guns belong in the hand of those trained to use them. Read our Founders writings on the 2nd and you will find that familiarity with firearms is one of the main purposes of the ammendment.

  9. BOB BECKEL IS ONE DUMB-DUMB ANTI LIBERAL ON FOX NEWS – JUST TO MAKE THEM FAIR AND BALANCED. HE KNOWS PRACTICALLY NOTHING ABOUT THE SUBJECT OF RAPE OF WOMEN.

AS MOST OF THESE COLLEGES TODAY ARE SO DAMN LIBERAL, IT IS VERY HARD FOR A WOMAN TO DEFEND HERSELF ON CAMPUS, BUT LETS NOT FORGOT THAT THE LADIES CAN CARRY A FAST ONE-HAND OPENING KNIFE TO DEFEND THEMSELVES.

THE U.S. EDUCATIONAL DEPARTMENT HAS INFILTRATED AND MADE THE SCHOOLS SO ANTI-GUN THAT A 6-YEAR OLD CAN’T EVEN DRAW A PICTURE OF ONE WITHOUT BEING HARASSED.

YEARS AGO IN THE LATE 80-S A COLLEGE CITY IN FLORIDA HAD A RASH OF RAPES – UNTIL THE NRA AND THE LOCAL POLICE STARTED TRAINING THE WOMEN TO DEFEND THEMSELVES WITH HAND GUNS – AND ADVERTISING THE FACT. RAPES DROPPED TO ABOUT NILL. YEARS AGO THE NRA HAD A SLOGAN THAT IS SO APPROPRIATE TODAY – “YOU CAN’T RAPE A .38.”

MORE AND MORE OF THESE RAPISTS AND/OR MURDERERS NEED TO BE SHOT DEAD IN THE ACT – IF NOT, THE BLEEDING HEARTS ON THE JURY THAT THE LIBERAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY PUT THERE WILL GIVE HIM A LIGHT SENTENCE. TOO MANY TIMES THE FEMALE-VICTIM IS THE ONLY ONE WHO GETS THE DEATH PENALTY. NEVER, NEVER GIVE IN TO THE SOB – BLAST HIM IN THE JEWELS AND THEN BETWEEN THE EYES.

  10. Interesting comments. School campuses are a collection of the general public, and as such, we should expect to find practically every type of individual in attendance there, pretty much.
Now to the real issue. It really is about the constitutional right to be able to protect yourself. Whether you choose to do so or not is a personal decision. If you choose to wait until the police show – or in these cases, walk to the police station after the crime is committed – if you can still walk, then that really is your personal choice. However, if you choose to protect yourself with the same protection that you attacker may have, then I believe you have a right to do so. So people like Glenn have a right to carry a flashlight, stick, whistle or nothing. He has that choice and should thing a long time before he tells someone else about their rights. People should know that actually carrying a weapon is not done lightly. People who do, think, study, research long and hard in most cases before taking that (what can be an uncomfortable step). They study the correct weapon for protection, the right ammunition that will not hurt others with over penentration and will STOP OR ELIMINATE the pending threat. They also understand that carrying invokes a level of responsbility to help others around them who become victums of these violent public shootings. And carry people usually practice, plan defense, practice and invest a lot of money in tools they hope they never will have to use. I guess to summerize, Glenn, you might just say “thank you” to the ladies who posted here and tend to your own choices and rights rather than attempting to impose on the rights of others. AND for your information, I do not carry. I did recently purchase a home defense shotgun and a safe to keep it in – when I am not there. But prior to that, I have not had a weapon for 30 years. Thanks, Larry

  11. Colorado’s answer to the potential rape victim is to…ready for this? Pee down your leg.Yes after the callbox and the whistle fail you must “man-up” and piss yourself. THAT will stop the rapist! Really? What if it is a murderer instead of a rapist? I realize that the warm comfortable feeling of urine running down one’s leg is a mainstay of the liberal mindset, but I never thought that they would actually vocalize it. Must have been slow learners when it came to potty training. My wife packs legally…or illegally we are Americans first and will abide by stupid laws last.

  12. THE Ohio State University, home of the THEs,is and has been beset by violent,RAPING, robbing predation FOR MANY YEARS perpetrated by an entrenched and media ignored (SURPRISE) criminal underclass that surrounds it and considers it their private hunting grounds. I personally knew 2 women savaged there.
Temple University in Philadelphia (B.S. 1971) was an equally afflicted island of civilization in an “ethnic” open air cesspool to the degree that a campus police force,a branch of The PA State Police, was established there in 1969.
I knew a Grad Student that was gratuitously blown away for target practice by a Juvie Hood Rat as he was walking down the steps of The School of Communications the evening he turned in his Master’s Project. A fairly well known Philly TV Babe I knew was assaulted on the Temple subway stop platform by similar predators that got a big surprise when she, with recently acquired karate skills, laid one of them out…causing the rest to flee—chittering.
Some aware Med Staff at Temple Medical, with the sense that God gave them, have been packing something light fast and punchy FOR YEARS to protect against things like Hood Rats barging into ER intent on finishing the killing that they previously attempted on the filthy, dysfunctional streets of one of the worst urban hellholes in this afflicted nation.
Drexel and U of P also have it bad, but not as bad as Temple.
If Nutter(appropriate surname?!) and the rest of his PC delusional crew and sympathizers don’t like the revelation of these bitter truths; I almost care.

  13. I am a college Safety Officer (We are unarmed, not peace officers). We do everything that police do except do not make arrests or carry weapons. We do provide escorts to any college patron for any reason, such as fear of safety at night, orders of protection, disabilities etc. We constantly patrol and have a strong visible presence. Our campus gun free. So far we have not had any shootings, however there are times that we get reports of weapons & do a search for the same, unarmed & without body armor. We’re aware that we are a primary target. We have problem students on medications & also felons & gang members on campus. Many are students with HIPAA laws protecting their identity, masking potential problems. I believe everyone on campus is a sitting duck for any deranged shooter, & that we should be expertly trained with firearms to carry, as it takes a few minutes for PD to arrive, whereas we are there in a minute or less. I’d prefer the only guns on campus be in qualified hands. Some students & faculty are responsible, & some are not. Everyone should have the right to carry protection, but only with proper training. Discretion & foresight are invaluable, however foresight is often not a viable option when college pressures & adolescent hormones rule the mind. Students acting out is a daily, common occurrence on campus, including the women too. I can only advocate carrying on campus with very extensive training and background checks, with continual periodic review of the same. My job is to protect everyone without being able to even protect myself, due to our gun free campus rules. The rule works 2 ways, for us yet against us. I thank God we have not had the need for firepower in the 8 years I’ve been here. We’ve had stabbings, fights and tons of incidences with disturbed individuals. If these same people were carrying guns it probably would be worse, compounded by others feeling the need to shoot in defense. In general, we are better off without guns on campus, but God help us on the day that we need them, like when some poorly medicated whako decides to become a violent legend. Then I will be thankful that the “right” people were carrying at that time.

  14. Glenn, it is apparent you do not carry a gun nor know how to use one. As a handgun instructor to women who shoot extremely often, I can assure you that any woman is capable of carrying, drawing, firing and killing a would be attacker. The ladies under my tutelage are just common women, with a common goal: shooting. We shoot every week. We train every week. We learn skills not taught by half-witted politicians who laughably tell us to piss on ourselves. No, we are not too stupid, emotional or ignorant to handle a gun. Not only are some of these ladies expert marksman, we all have our CHL and we can, and will, use that liberty to kill any threat to our person, our friends and yes, even you if necessary. Get a grip. Or you can hide in fear. We absolutely will NOT.

  15. No Glenn, they should not have posted it because you are an idiot, not someone with common sense. There are lots of ways for women to carry concealed. Bra holsters, purse compartments and others that make accessing your weapon fast and easy — especially for those who do their homework and practice. In seedy areas or at times when I feel the need, I will inconspicuously slip my hand into a hidden pocket of a purse where I have a hidden gun. If grabbed or knocked to the ground, I can reach a hand, even if in a bear hug, under my shirt and grab a weapon to defend myself.
Common sense dictates you cannot protect against every situation, but you prepare as best you can. You sound like someone who prefers women who are victims and would prefer they only have whistles. Is it women’s safety you are worried about or your own?

  16. AJ-
I found that the following states allow guns on campus: Colorado, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin.
These states leave it up to the college’s discretion: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia

The website, ArmedCampuses.org has a list of a few schools that allow guns on campus, but let me warn you, Armed Campuses.org is anti-gun.

  17. Glenn, not every attack is a blindsided attack. You don’t give women any credit for being aware of their surroundings, or fighting off an attacker. One could say the very same thing of you.

  18. Rape is a blitz attack, unless a woman has her weapon drawn; in which case the rapist will just move along. Your logic is faulty if she has it concealed. I doubt that she will be able to draw it and in the ensuing struggle will probably get shot and maybe worst, situational awareness will prevent more rapes. I know this post won’t get posted because I demonstrate too much common sense a gun isn’t the answer to every problem!

  19. KIndly state which those 25 campuses are that allow concealed carry on the premises. And which 6 states that allow concealed carry on campus. You’ve mentioned–in passing–Colorado, and implied–in your photo caption–University of Utah. Where are the rest??? Otherwise all you have is a puff piece rehashing what other articles have said. Don’t just leave us hanging–there might even be a few readers who’d want to consider a transfer!

  20. As long as you, and your trajectory are not in a “Gun Free Zone” or “Masacere Without Consequences Zone”, you will at least have things in your favor. Your neighbors will as well.

  21. rapers deserve the worst!!! they should be tryed and punished on tv so other perv’s get scared off. will think twice before doin it. even casterated on tv.

  22. It is my personal opinion that every college campus should offer training (at the college level) on the state’s laws on concealed carry, use of lethal force, castle doctrine or stand your ground, firearms familiarization and safe handling, basic marksmanship (especially with a handgun) and THE NRA Course Refuse To Be A Victim, etc. and upon successful completion and demonstration of basic competency with a handgun interested students should be issued a CCW valid on and off campus. That would stop an awful lot of the violent crimes committed on campus including mass shootings by drug crazed idiots shooting up our kids.
