At first, I thought Mother’s Day was a strange day for some “group therapy,” but quickly reversed course and began thinking of reasons to celebrate that special lady—with a gun!
I am new to lever action rimfire rifles, having grown up with auto-loading 22 rifles like the Mossberg 702 and the Ruger 10/22. However, I was eager to review my Henry Golden Boy Silver the moment I picked it up at my local dealer, both as a firearm and from a perspective of someone completely new to the platform.
Depending on the state, turkey seasons run from early March to the end of May. While southern hunters are finishing up for the year, others to the north are just getting started. Most turkey hunters are in a rush to fill a tag, but some of the best days in the woods come throughout the month of May, including the end of the month. President Trump offered encouragement at the 2017 NRA-ILA Leadership Conference with his promise, “You have a true friend and champion in the White House. No longer will federal agencies be coming after law-abiding gun owners. No longer will the government be trying to undermine your rights and your freedoms as Americans. Instead, we will work with you, by your side.”
One reason for the uptick in hunters who went out mostly for the meat is the locavore movement, a growing national trend reflecting interest in eating locally and taking a more active role in the acquisition of food, especially organic, free-range, chemical- and hormone-free meat. The growing popularity of the locavore movement is perhaps best exemplified by the fact that Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook and an icon of the millennial generation, has taken up hunting as a means of procuring his own meat Zuckerberg was recently quoted as saying that food “Tastes doubly better when you’ve hunted the animal yourself.”
For years, the anti gunners have railed against concealed weapon permits putting law-abiding self-defenders on the defensive (no pun intended). What would happen if we flipped the script and employers started requiring employees to get their permit? That would not force them to carry, but think of the environment? Everyone you work with would have passed a background check. How much safer would you feel working in an environment where all of your fellow employees was welcomed to be armed?
The 6.5 Creedmore was certainly the big news from this year’s SHOT Show and likely to be future of long-range shooting. If you are serious about going long, Savage’s new Model 10 GRS will be a must have regardless of whether you go with the newer, sexy 6.5 Creedmoor or the venerable .308 Winchester. Here is the full release from Savage Arms.
Along with good calling and proper concealment, most turkey hunters agree that employing decoys is one of the most effective strategies for coaxing a gobbler within range. However, decoying a fickle longbeard isn’t as simple putting out a phony bird or two and pulling the trigger. There’s a correct time, place and way to do almost anything.
Your hunting areas have changed and the turkeys have already adapted. Will you? These are just a couple of the common expressions you’ll hear from turkey hunters at this time of year. And while they’re growing increasingly excited about the coming spring season, amazingly, most turkey hunters don’t start scouting until just prior to the season opener. If you really are excited about bagging a longbeard this season, start scouting now.
