The All-Around Soviet Rifle — The SKS

Not long ago conversation around the fireplace drifted toward the subject of all-around rifles. I like these moments because my grandson is old enough to shoot, and he is interested in firearms but hasn’t heard it all before. I enjoy a number of interesting rifles including the M1A1 and the AR-15. A certain place in my heart belongs to the Winchester 1895. But if you are on a strict budget but need an all around pest, deer, hog and defense rifle it is difficult to beat the SKS rifle.

Range Report: Ruger’s Rugged GP100 Goes Big Bore

State of the art is a good description. Among the most successful designs is the Ruger GP100 revolver. The Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum is easily the most accurate revolver I have fired recently. The only revolver that may exhibit superior accuracy is the Colt Python. However, the Colt, sadly, is no longer in production and terribly expensive. Thankfully, the GP100 is chock full of features with range performance worthy of a Ruger.

Snub Nose Magnum Revolvers — Unequivocal

With the great and growing abundance of concealed carry permits as Americans exercise their rights and commons sense, and a present political climate that nurtures such progress, armed citizens are flexing their political muscles and choosing to be responsible for their own safety. While the revolver is seen as old technology to some, there are few handguns as reliable and accurate as the short barrel .357 Magnum revolver.

Range Report: Testing Practical .45 Colt Accuracy at 100 Yards

The Army demanded that the Single Action Army take down an Indian war pony at 100 yards. Was this a reasonable expectation? The question is an interesting one, and perhaps since we do not have a need to shoot Indian war ponies these days, irrelevant. However, with our interests piqued, we simply had to have the answer, so Bob Campbell took on the challenge. Here are the results.

The ’97 Wild Bunch Shotgun

The Winchester 1897 shotgun was manufactured from 1897 to 1957. At one time the ’97 set the standard for combat shotguns. With a five-round tubular magazine fed by a helical coil spring and featuring a reliable slide action the ’97 is a rugged serviceable shotgun. While the author has tested quite a few shotguns for a new book, the pump-action clone of the Winchester 1897 is a hands-down favorite for fun shooting.

Smith and Wesson’s Big Bore .45 ACP Shield

The Smith and Wesson Military and Police Shield is among the most popular carry guns in America. Light but reliable and accurate this slim line single column magazine pistol has much to recommend. In fact, many believe Smith and Wesson’s .45 ACP Shield is the answer to their personal defense needs. The author certainly agrees. Will you?

Range Report: Walther CCP

Walther’s CCP has generated a lot of attention. Light, attractive, and with the Walther name, the pistol was designed to compete with the Glock 43 9mm and similar sized handguns for personal defense. However, not all ammunition ran smoothly for the author. Read the full review.

Review: Ruger 10/22 M1 Carbine

Among the most useful, reliable and practically accurate .22 caliber rifles made is the Ruger 10/22. Introduced in 1964, the Ruger 10/22 has become the most popular .22 rimfire rifle in America. I mean, who hasn’t owned one or at least wished they had? Building on the legacy of the 10/22, RUger has introduced the Ruger 10/22 M1 Carbine. Among the notable features of the 10/22 M1 is a protected front sight that keeps with the military appearance theme. However, the most interesting modification to the original Ruger 10/22 is the rear sight, but that’s not all that makes this baby M1 honor it military theme. Range Report: Rock Island Armory’s Baby Rock Rocks!

Recently, Rock Island Armory (Armscor) introduced the 1911A1 .380 ACP known simply as the Baby Rock. Rock fans and shooters everywhere are going to love this handgun. Most small 1911s are more 1911-like than true 1911. The Baby Rock features a plunger tube, slide lock safety, beavertail grip safety, low bore axis and straight to the rear trigger compression. This is a true small 1911.
