I have never recommended purse carry. The drawbacks are plenty. However, I do recognize that some women will only carry that way. It is your choice to make. I won’t chastise either way. If you choose to carry in your purse, you must be hyper vigilant it is there, not only to follow your state’s concealed carry laws, but in order to keep your handgun secured. The following are some tips if you decide to carry in your purse.
With one look, experienced shotgunners will probably want to ask, “Just tell me. Is it a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 clone?” On the contrary, Rock Island Armory’s M5 pump-action shotgun is neither. The M5 is actually based on the underrated, now obsolete High Standard Manufacturing Flite-King pump-action shotguns. High Standard used to market its shotguns as the “world’s fastest firing pump-action shotguns.” They eject by gravity alone. Sounds crazy, but flip the M5 upside down, click the slide release and it does just that.
Saying goodbye to summer, we use the day now to spend time with friends and family at the lake, celebrating with brews and bar-b-ques. It is also the weekend dove season opens in many states. A lot of us will be choosing to shoot over Labor Day weekend. Do me a favor—let us all vow to shoot and drink responsibly, but not together, okay?
Don’t be scared off when you read who makes the K2-45 .45 ACP pistol. Just because you are unfamiliar with the name, Sarsilmaz does not mean the company doesn’t make a good quality pistol. The only reason why you are unfamiliar with the name is because the Turkish manufacturer’s handguns have not been widely available in the United States for long. Based on CZ-75’s .45 ACP cousin, the CZ-97B, the K2-45 resembles a mix-match of the CZ with a SIG P220 slide. The alloy forged steel frame, slide and barrel make the K2-45 one helluva hefty beast.
Though not as easy or convenient as a modern day laser rangefinder, the WWII Finnish military surplus stereoscopic rangefinder is half the price of its modern day counterparts, and just as reliable. Not only does the WWII rangefinder provide a topic of conversation and a challenge to its operator, using basic principles of prisms, mirrors and your own visual cortex you can calculate the correct range of a target up to 25,000 meters. That’s 15 miles!
Part of being a responsible gun owner is securing your firearms from people who are not authorized to use them, criminals and children being your top priorities. One way to stash your handguns is to repurpose items found at the big box stores, many pieces of furniture or decorative items have storage. A family with a very active, curious and wandering toddler did just that. Not having the money to invest in a quality biometric safe, an unused photo frame jewelry box became storage for their handguns and ammo.
Potable water is a top priority during a natural disaster, survival situation or when traveling overseas. As campers, hikers, explorers, hunters and survivalists, we know how important it is to have a back-up water supply for when clean, drinkable water is not available. Packing Aquamira’s chlorine dioxide water treatment drops guarantees safe drinking water when you have none. Here is a simple guide how to use the water treatment drops.
Camping, hiking and backpacking can have a detrimental impact on wildlife and vegetation. Studies throughout the United States have proven that trampling through the wilderness and camping have depleted trees, polluted fresh water systems, caused loss of vegetation and increased run off and erosion. According to Wilderness.net only 5% of the United States is protected wilderness. Which means the other 95% is open for development. As outdoorsmen and women, we can minimize our environmental impact by following best practices while enjoying the wide and wonderful outdoors. By practicing Leave No Trace’s Seven Principles, you will leave a minimal environmental impact while camping, hiking, backpacking, and hunting. When camping, I like to follow the rule of thumb: leave it the way you found it.
Maybe you are brand new to the gun world, jonesing for a new gun, preparing for the apocalypse, want to start hunting, or need something for home protection. Perhaps you checked all the boxes above. Would you be surprised to hear that one gun will do all of that? One gun does truly rule most—the 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. Even if you haven’t jumped on the shotgun bandwagon yet, let the Mossberg 500 JIC convince you. If you were to only purchase one gun, especially for a survival or emergency situation, the Mossberg 500 JIC is the smarter choice.
Now over 20 states have some form of no duty to retreat law. Misinterpreted as “shoot first” laws, many people do not understand that a Stand your Ground Law is simply an extension of the Castle Doctrine. It is not a shoot first ask questions later law. One cannot shoot simply because they are afraid. In all justified homicides, in the public domain and in your home, the person you shoot must have the ability to harm you, the opportunity, and have put you in jeopardy. You cannot legally apply unreasonable force.
