It’s a .223, but it’s not an AR-15?

Okay so you would like a .223/5.56 rifle. You want it in black, and you would like it to be a semi-automatic. No problem, let me just show you this AR-15, wait what? You say you already have more ARs than old jeans? Oh okay, well we have some other guns here that sport the 5.56 round and aren’t part of Eugene’s Stoner’s ingenious design, but are still pretty sweet.

Saiga Automatic Rifle

Saiga Automatic Rifle

A great way to throw .223 downrange on the cheap, the Saiga follows the tried and true AK design, with minor differences. The designers chambered it in .223, resulting in a very reliable and robust platform. This model includes a ten round detachable magazine and a 16.3-inch barrel. The rifle weighs in at 7.9 pounds. You can throw this rifle in the dirt and mud and it will still cycle like new. Saiga rifles come with a hunting buttstock and forend. Designers intended the Saiga product line of rifles for hunting big and medium-sized game under different climatic conditions. Izhmash, where the world-renowned Kalashnikov AK-47 was developed and manufactured, makes these rifles with the same durability and reliability as their original AK counterparts.

Kel-Tec SU-16B

Kel-Tek SU-16B
Kel-Tek SU-16B

Ah, good ‘ole Kel-Tec, the makers of some of the most revolutionary and strange firearms ever created. They decided the world needed another .223-chambered rifle and that is just what they delivered. The “Bravo” model retains all the features of the original SU-16, such as an integrated bipod, Picatinny rail, and a rotating stock, with magazine storage. However, the “Bravo” has a lighter and shorter barrel, about 8 oz. and 2.3 inches. This updated rifle comes equipped with a chrome-lined bore and chamber. The front and rear sights are hard coat anodized aluminum and are adjustable for elevation and windage, respectively. They are both removable and the front sight uses AR-15 style sight posts. The SU-16B is not a replacement for the original SU-16, but a complement for customers that put a premium on lightweight and compact rifles. Shooters can purchase Bravo type sights as a retrofit for SU-16 owners preferring the AR-15/M16 front sight system.

Gotta get me one of these.

Finding an AR-15 in this price range that is as reliable as this weapon is almost impossible. Ruger Mini-14/5P

The legendary Ruger Mini-14 provides precision on the range, at the ranch, on patrol or in the woods. For decades, Ruger Mini-14® rifles have been the choice for applications ranging from the farm and ranch, to the deep woods, to personal defense. Their short barrels and overall short length make them favorites in any application where maneuverability and ease of handling are priorities. With a variety of configurations from the standard Ranch Rifle, the extremely accurate Mini-14 Target Rifle, and the Tactical models with ATI folding stock or compact barrel with flash suppressor – there is a Mini-14 or Mini-30 to meet any demand. Specifically designed for mounting today’s scopes or other optical sighting systems, these rifles include a side ejection to clear the top mounted scope, and a patented recoil buffer, which protects the scope from damage or shifting the point of impact as the semi-automatic action cycles. In 1974, Ruger introduced this incredible platform to gun buyers everywhere. Ruger derived the Mini-14 from the military M14 rifle implying a miniature version of the M14. Ruger used the M14 as a model for the new rifle while incorporating numerous innovations and cost-saving engineering changes. Based on such a legend, the Mini-14 is perfect for any hunting, home defense, or law enforcement situation.
