There are plenty of amazing guns out there. However, have you ever wondered what people are actually buying? It may, or may not, surprise you that not everyone buys a $2,000 fully decked out Knights Armament AR-15. Our most common sellers are usually home defense shotguns, semi automatic .22s, and .380 pistols. I pulled our sales data from the last six months and made an interesting discovery.

The most common question presented to trainers, writers, and the family ‘gun person’ is, “Which handgun should I purchase for personal defense?” The bottom line is dependent upon the shooter and how much or how little time, effort, and training will go into the final choice. There are many firearms that are well suited to personal defense. But the student differs mentally and physically, and so should the choices each individual makes. The first step is individual research and study.
The .223 self-loader does not have to be an AR-15. There are some who like the classic handling of a wooden dog and semi-pistol grip. Do not put down anyone and do not get into a debate, as long as the choice works for them. As for myself, I obtained a Ruger Mini-14 as soon as possible after its introduction. I found the Mini-14 an excellent choice for personal defense, police work, and predator calling.
The argument between which firearm is best for home defense is almost as old as the 9mm vs. .45 ACP debate. However, we are still debating it because neither camp has conceded. The primary argument against the shotgun is a longer length leading to less maneuverability. On the other hand, the pistol offers better maneuverability, but lacks the stopping power of a shotgun and you may be giving up some accuracy according to the critics.
In this video, sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Clint Smith, president and director of the Thunder Ranch training center, talks about why the comparative length of a handgun—when used properly—is insignificant to that of a shotgun and that length alone should not be a deterrent when choosing a firearm for home defense.
Did the video change your opinion or strategy for protecting your home? Which do you depend on—shotgun, handgun, or both? What caliber, or gauge? Share your answers in the comment section.

A few months ago, SIG Sauer introduced its new line of handgun ammunition. It is always good to see honest competition—especially among the top tier of manufacturers. And this is just what we have, top tier loads.
There are shotguns that do not look like shotguns. All are not practical, but a few do have merit. Among the most innovative and interesting is the Kel-Tec KSG shotgun.
At times, I prefer to be the early adopter; the first kid on the block with the new bauble. With other products, I would prefer to let the market sort out the bugs and prove the product before I invest. Self-defense shotguns can be that way.
The short-barreled double barrel shotgun with hammers is often called a coach gun or side-by-side shotgun.
I just finished reading an article about a Mexican hitman who claims to have killed over 30 people. In the article, he talked about kidnapping people, torturing, and eventually killing them—usually with a gun. While there’s no saying if this interview was legit, this quote did jump out at me: “Each kidnapping starts with locating the target. The best place is at a home, early in the morning—when everyone is asleep.”
The Honor Defense Honor Guard 9mm handgun is a rule beater. All American, even down to domestic steel, the Honor Guard 9mm isn’t a cheap handgun made to undersell the competition.
A few weeks ago, my family moved into a new house. Our old house was quite small and with a growing family
In a world awash with mediocre handguns, a pistol with reliability, accuracy, and good features at a fair price is a desirable commodity. The Canik TP9SA exemplifies this concept.
When it comes to personal defense ammunition, we all want the most for our dollar and a load that maximizes the caliber. This is especially true with the popular 9mm Luger cartridge.
Daniel McNamara and his wife returned to their Detroit home last month around 6 p.m. As the McNamara’s entered their home, two men approached them from behind and ordered them inside the home at gunpoint. The suspects told the McNamara’s to turn around so they wouldn’t remember their faces while they stole jewelry, cash, cell phones, and other valuables.
Among the decisions to be made when purchasing a personal defense handgun are caliber, action type, and size and weight. Among the options to be considered is the light rail. A rail gun is common parlance for a handgun with an accessory rail, but some just consider it common sense.
When the Glock pistol was introduced, like many, I was skeptical of the polymer-framed pistol. I had positive experiences with the HK P9S 9mm and did not regard polymer as cheap—far from it. The HK was an extraordinary pistol. Rigorous testing and experience removed skepticism. The Glock was a reliable, affordable, and durable service pistol chambered for the popular 9mm Luger cartridge.
