Range Report: The Classic Bolt Guns — Mauser, Enfield, and Springfield

The Mauser, Enfield, and Springfield have all earned their place in history and on the battlefield. Today, each of these can be obtained with a minimum of expense—depending on condition, configuration, and historical attributes. No collector, or accumulator of firearms as the author proclaims, should be without at least one if not all three. Join Bob Campbell in this Range Report as he shoots, and rates, each of these classics.

The All-Around Soviet Rifle — The SKS

Not long ago conversation around the fireplace drifted toward the subject of all-around rifles. I like these moments because my grandson is old enough to shoot, and he is interested in firearms but hasn’t heard it all before. I enjoy a number of interesting rifles including the M1A1 and the AR-15. A certain place in my heart belongs to the Winchester 1895. But if you are on a strict budget but need an all around pest, deer, hog and defense rifle it is difficult to beat the SKS rifle.

The Riot Gun

What is a riot gun? The riot gun is compact enough for any foreseeable need, handles quickly, and swings from one target to the other rapidly in trained hands. But, is it the best shotgun for tactical work? Read the entire—especially the plot twist at the end.

Gun Review: Henry .22 Magnum Small Game Carbine

The folks at Henry Repeating Arms Company made another gun to be proud of with the Small Game Carbine, chambered in .22 Magnum. This lever-action rifle delivers on several levels. The gun is handsome and plain, reminiscent of a grandpa’s pocket knife. There’s no pizzazz, as well as nothing unappealing in its appearance. It’s a utilitarian tool, and a perfect example of form following function.

Range Report: Ruger’s Rugged GP100 Goes Big Bore

State of the art is a good description. Among the most successful designs is the Ruger GP100 revolver. The Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum is easily the most accurate revolver I have fired recently. The only revolver that may exhibit superior accuracy is the Colt Python. However, the Colt, sadly, is no longer in production and terribly expensive. Thankfully, the GP100 is chock full of features with range performance worthy of a Ruger.

Review: Ruger Blackhawk

Today, much of the market seems to revolve around tactical gear and personal defense. That is important, nothing is more vital than taking responsibility for our own safety. However, personal defense isn’t the only reason to own a powerful and accurate handgun such as the Ruger Blackhawk. This single-action revolver is also a fine target gun and a great game getter.

Review: Walther PPS M2 9mm Pistol

The PPS was a gun ahead of its time delivering a feature rich, accurate, and configurable, ready-to-carry single stack that could behave like a compact, mid- and full- sized gun. Based on two years of carrying and shooting the PPS, it is my perception that it is one of the best subcompact concealed carry single-stack guns on the market despite the introduction of many other competitor firearms.

Review: Glock G29 10mm Pistol — Bad Things Roam at Night

Actually, owning two Desert Eagles, I would argue the Glock 10mm is “the” most reliable high power semi-auto pistol and the G29 is the smallest format available. The 10mm G29 is capable of delivering 600-800 ft./lbs. of energy depending on the ammo you feed it. Not bad considering you have 10+1 rounds on tap—it’s a lot of firepower in a very small concealable package. Best of all, shooters with medium to small hands can establish a comfortable and secure grip. Read the full review to learn the history of the 10mm and how the G29 performs.

Snub Nose Magnum Revolvers — Unequivocal

With the great and growing abundance of concealed carry permits as Americans exercise their rights and commons sense, and a present political climate that nurtures such progress, armed citizens are flexing their political muscles and choosing to be responsible for their own safety. While the revolver is seen as old technology to some, there are few handguns as reliable and accurate as the short barrel .357 Magnum revolver.

Tactical Shotgun Loads

The shotgun is a great problem solver and best regarded as a tactical system. This is primarily due the respect and homage we pay to the great versatility of the shotgun and its payload. Why many shotguns may fit the bill, it is the ammunition that delivers the lethal blow. Will your load be up to the threat?
