Arex broke into the market in a big way with the introduction of the Rex Zero 1S. The pistol was not revolutionary and chock full of new features. Instead, many labeled its reliability as the ultimate SHTF gun—an improvement on current popular models all combined into one gun. The Zero 1 was followed by the Alpha, an out-of-the-box competition-ready pistol with an MSRP around $1,000. For 2019, Arex is set to release the Delta, a striker-fired polymer pistol, and The Shooter’s Log went to Slovenia to get a first look at the prototype.

In an age when everything plastic rules, a handgun made of steel with a design more than 100 years old still drives the market. We are talking, of course, of the fabled 1911, and a third of the new guns that follow are based on this legendary platform. That’s not to say that there is no interest in itty-bitty pocket pistols, and it’s clear the revolver is not the antiquated firearm many assume.
The story of handguns and how they work is very interesting but may also be frustrating to the beginner. Some definitions are stretched by the makers. Understanding how a pistol operates is an important part of the selection process when choosing a handgun. This article details the action and how the trigger action affects performance and handling.
Syntech uses a total synthetic jacket, termed the TSJ by Federal Cartridge Company. The lead-alloy core is covered with a red polymer coating. No lead, which is termed a heavy metal, is exposed. From the company that gave us Nyclad ammunition, this is just another step but a different and important one. This isn’t really a coating, but more of a durable sheath or shield.
“We are not trying to buy the next customer with a rebate or freebie. We wanted to take care of all of our customers, by offering them the incentive—even after the sale. After all, they are all part of the Rex family,” said Walker English, director of sales for FIME Group.
The Rex Zero differs in detail from the SIG P series. The Rex Zero features a handy frame-mounted decocker that serves to lower the hammer from the cocked position. The manual of arms is simple. The appearance is simply attractive, even cool. Two tone with dark black over FDE looks great. For me the FDE frame is a way shooters like myself can show camaraderie with those in the sandbox just as I leave the green light burning on the porch for our soldiers.
If you like the SIG you will like this gun. You might even find a number of improvements at a great price! Now we have a compact Rex Zero, and it is a good shooter.
If you like the SIG Sauer P226, you will love this gun. Look a little closer, and you might even find a number of improvements at a great price! The AREX Rex Zero 1 9mm is an interesting handgun that has proven reliable, accurate, and ergonomic. The pistol is the first handgun manufactured solely in Slovenia, but that’s not all this new pistol will be first in.
