Review: Colt 1991A1 — The Modern Colt

A couple of decades ago, Colt needed a price beater. The company was losing market share to Springfield’s GI and Mil Spec pistols, not to mention the imports. Initially, the 1991A1 featured cheap plastic grips and a matte finish. However, the grips did not support the plunger tube and were soon replaced by superior rubber stocks. Today’s 1991A1 pistols feature a blue finish, nice wooden grips, and all of the features of a top-performing modern 1911.

Low Capacity, High Efficiency

The trend in handguns has been toward increased capacity. Many revolvers have even gained a cartridge or two in modern designs. However, high capacity doesn’t always mean greater efficiency. Here are nine top performers

Review: Springfield 911 .380 ACP

Springfield Armory has recently introduced one of the neatest, most compact, and useful .380 ACP handguns in the past decade. That is a bold statement, but this is a fine handgun sure to be enjoyed by many shooters. I normally include a spec sheet at the end of the report, but the size of the 911 is among the things that are most interesting, so I will discuss size first.

Review: Coonan’s Hard-Hitting .357 Magnum 1911

The Coonan really shines as a field and hunting handgun for those that appreciate an instant second shot and the fast handling of the 1911 design. The pistol is fast on target to the first shot, but recoil is such that fast follow-up shots are not in the class with the .45 ACP. And that is ok.

The CMP Starts Release of 100,000 M1 Garands!

While I wish we were reporting that the 1911s were ready for distribution, that’s not the case. However, we have something as good, if not better. The CMP received the Garands over the last month or so. Currently, the CMP is busy prepping the guns for sale. Each of the M1s will have to be cleaned, inspected, potentially repaired or rebuilt, and then test fired. Best of all, some of these rifles are already being offered for sale.

Range Report: Les Baer Concept VI 1911

Les Baer handguns are legendary 1911s with more than a little hand fitting and a vial of the maker’s sweat included. They are built, rather than assembled, and offer topflight performance for discerning shooters. Are they perfect? Perhaps not, but they are very close. Read the full report to how the Concept VI handled at the range.

Stopping Power: Top Choices for Self-Defense Ammunition

If the effectiveness of a bullet can be summed up in a single phrase, it would be “stopping power.” The more stopping power a bullet delivers, the more effective it will be at ending a confrontation in your favor. Make no mistake; stopping power and caliber do not share the direct correlation many people think.

Springfield Armory 1911 Range Officer Now Available In Stainless Steel

Springfield Armory designed the original Range Officer models for high-volume use with a durable and corrosion resistance Parkerized finish. Two new Range Officer models for 2016 continue to offer a similar level of finish durability, but with an attractive new brushed stainless steel look. The 9mm vs. .45 ACP rages again. Which side do align with?
