Top 10 Apps for Concealed Carry

Perhaps you live in Illinois—the last state to open concealed carry—and are welcoming concealed carry for the first time, someone who has been carrying for years, or the Zimmerman trial has piqued your interest. No matter the reason, your smartphone or tablet can be one of the best devices to keep you safe and out of handcuffs. Unfortunately, we do not have reciprocity for concealed carry like we do with driver licenses. Recognition varies by state. Laws vary by state or county. Something as simple as a wrong turn can take you across a state or county line that could result in you being arrested.

Fortunately, we live in a technological age with entrepreneurs willing to help. There are several apps that will update you with the latest legislative changes. GPS proximity alerts that warn you before entering a business or government building where weapons are restricted. Planning apps that let you check the policy of a business, then call the proprietor to voice your disdain with a policy or reward firearm-friendly businesses with a positive comment and recommendation.

Here is a list of 10 of the leading CCW apps. Although we have provided links, depending on whether you are using an Android based phone or iPhone, you may have to search the title on either Google Play or iTunes to find the app. We also included the number of stars the app currently has. Be careful though. Most of the ratings are based on a small number of reviews and may not be a true indicator of the app’s true potential.

Posted! Carry List Anti-Gun
– .99¢
– 4 Stars

App Developer’s Description

This application is for any gun owner! The purpose of this app is for the legal and conscientious concealed carry license holder to know where they cannot legally carry before getting there. A licensed permit holder or a resident of a constitutional carry state can usually legally carry their firearm in any location other than statutory “no carry” locations such as schools, government buildings, etc., and in businesses that are posted prohibiting firearms. This is a list of those posted anti-gun businesses.

Find hotels where you can’t carry before booking a trip to one. Find restaurants where you cannot carry before making dinner plans. Find stores to avoid before you step out the door. It is extremely inconvenient to not find out until you get to a location where they prohibit your Second Amendment rights. You have to either disarm in the parking lot (causing your vehicle to be a target for thieves) or go somewhere else at the last second. If you know beforehand, you can avoid the places that prohibit carry, or you can leave your firearm at home if you must attend.

We have a comprehensive list of “posted anti-gun” locations collected in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. We have assembled smaller lists in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming—all provided by many great gun forums and sites with their permission. Since it is crowd-sourced by users like you, please help the list continue to grow!

This app includes the ability to call or send e-mail to a listed business to let them know your opinion! Also has the capability to add pro-gun alternatives that do not prohibit carry. Search for alternatives to the anti-gun businesses. Easily add new ones to the list every time you experience firearm-friendly service.

Laws regarding signage and prohibited locations (no sign needed) vary by state.

This list is user-updated, and will continue to get better over time. But this relies on you! If you go to a place not on the list and they have a sign, please add it with a few clicks via the “Add a Business” button. If a place had taken down their sign, get it removed the same way! If you already have a list of anti-gun businesses in your area or state, send us an e-mail. We would love to include any data you have collected, and give you credit for it!

Comments (10)

  1. If you have a Windows phone – get a clue and get a REAL phone. Windows phones won’t last, Android and iPhones are the supported phones out there. Look at the app support….These apps are for REAL phones.

  2. I just bought the first app on this list for .99 not the 1.49 noted above in the comments. I hadn’t thought of a recording, timestamping button before but that is a great idea.

  3. Sure would be nice if an app of this nature included a one-button widget to start a time/date stamped digital audio recording of interaction with law enforcement officers. In my state, one has a duty to notify upon contact with leo’s and while we have many more positive interactions, there are still those who don’t know or follow state laws. Our CHL’s are cross-referenced with motor vehicle registration so if one allows another to borrow their vehicle, they may be treated suspiciously and subject to inappropriate questioning.
Common sense and education is mandatory for all CHL carriers but many times laws are misinterpreted and misunderstood both by carriers and leo’s. Protect yourself at all times ….

  4. These are great but I have a windows phone which I love are there any apps like these out there for windows phones. Or does anyone know when these mightbe available in a windows version.

  5. Are you certain that these apps are not being offered by the government as a way to track gun owners?

    1. I have down loaded three of the Apps on this web site. Concealed carry 50 States, Legal Heat and Posted! Carry List Anti Gun. I reference the legal Heat App often. I am a former Law enforcement Officer of 32 years and like to stay informed.
