Is it Time to Eliminate the ATF? Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner Says Yes

With the last few years of botched sting operations, controversial operations and illegal gunrunning, the ATF has suffered from a lack of guidance, leadership and mission. A Congressman from Wisconsin, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner is currently writing a bill that will eliminate the ATF, farming out its responsibilities to other government agencies, such as the FBI. Faster and Furiouser? Meet B. Todd Jones, the ATF’s Newest Director

On Wednesday, July 30 2013, the Senate voted 53-42 to appoint B. Todd Jones as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Appointed by Attorney General Eric Holder, Jones has been the acting director since 2011, one of six acting directors in the last six years. He served as acting director part time, while serving full time as U.S. District Attorney for Minnesota. He walks into the position at a highly mistrusted and misdirected agency full of controversy and problems. The ATF is currently understaffed and their budget is tight, not to mention the unsolved Fast and Furious debacle. It will be difficult to fix all the problems and perceptions of the ATF.

Will Universal Background Checks Put Your Name on a List?

According to a GOA release, “… gun owners’ focus must now shift to the part of Obama’s agenda which poses the most danger because it is most likely to move: the requirement that the government approve every gun transfer in America — the so-called universal background check.”
