SHOT Show 2019 Recap

LMT AR-15 rifles at SHOT Show 2019

The National Shooting Sports Foundation’s (NSSF) 41st Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT), wrapped up its four-day run with many successes. While the pain of a lackluster introduction of new firearms was felt by many, the industry showed it was laying the groundwork for the next generation with a record number of new exhibitors the Suppliers Showcase and an innovative Pop-Up Preview that proved to be a hit with buyers.

The show, which ran Jan. 22-25 at the Sands Expo Center, showcased products used for target shooting, hunting, outdoor recreation and law enforcement purposes. More than 58,000 industry professionals attended with the number of exhibiting companies exceeding 2,400, a new record. Their booths covered more than 692,000 net square feet of exhibit space. The show was expected to pump approximately $90 million in non-gaming revenue into the Las Vegas economy.

The Supplier Showcase, which began two years ago, more than doubled in size to 540 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The growth of this section is expected to continue and is a major reason SHOT Show will expand to exhibit space at the MGM Grand Conference Center in 2020. The new one-day Pop-Up Preview gave visibility to more than 230 new exhibitors displaying clothing, footwear, camping and other hunting and outdoor gear.

At the NSSF State of the Industry presentation, NSSF CEO Steve Sanetti said that industry is too often negatively portrayed in the media and that its many programs that promote safety—such as Project ChildSafe and Operation Secure Store—are not sufficiently acknowledged for helping to stop firearms accidents, thefts and misuse. “We are resolved to not let our many good works go unnoticed or be wrongly credited to others, and we will not be defined by others,” Sanetti said.

Sanetti, who will retire at year’s end, was presented the NSSF Ken Sedlecky Lifetime Achievement Award by NSSF Board of Governors Chairman Bob Scott and new NSSF President Joe Bartozzi.

The show, marking its 10th straight year at the Sands Expo Center, attracted attendees from 111 countries. Some 12.5 miles of aisles led to displays of firearms, ammunition, accessories, optics, knives, gun safes, apparel and law enforcement equipment, among other categories. More than 400 companies displayed products in the show’s New Product Center, sponsored by U.S. Concealed Carry Association. In a continuing effort to provide space for companies on the exhibitor waiting list, the NEXT Pavilion gave first-time vendors welcome visibility and potential new customers.

“This SHOT Show was marked by innovative strategies to provide opportunities to new exhibitors while maintaining the quality experience for longtime exhibitors,” said Chris Dolnack, NSSF Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “The SHOT Show team works year-round to produce a high-quality show, and that effort again paid off.”

The show drew excellent reviews from exhibitors and attendees.

Daniel Defense’s Matt Allbritton was greatly pleased with the 2019 SHOT Show. “We are so excited about the release of our new Delta 5 bolt-action rifle, and we’ve had an incredible turnout here at our booth, with folks lining up to see the new rifle.”

Kevin Michalowski of the U.S. Concealed Carry Association said, “Traffic was very high at our booth, and we’re all very happy about that.”

At Head Down Firearms, maker of modern sporting rifles, Adam Williams said, “It’s our first year at SHOT Show, and it’s been an incredible experience. The booth traffic was consistent and especially heavy in the morning and late afternoon.”

Chris Tedford of True Velocity—makers of composite-cased ammunition—was pleased with this year’s turnout of buyers and said his booth was busy the entire show. “Being at SHOT has given us not only a good number of new customers, but has also presented us with some new business opportunities,” Tedford said.

SHOT Show, the largest trade show of its kind in the world, credentials approximately 2,400 members of the media.

The SHOT Show’s official opening on Tuesday was preceded by many events, including the 5th Annual NSSF/HAVA Golf Classic on Sunday in support of Honored American Veterans Afield, which works to aid the healing process of military veterans through hunting and other shooting sports activities. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised in support of this effort since the golf outing began in 2015.

Monday saw some of the SHOT Show’s most popular pre-show events—SHOT University, an education forum for retailers; Industry Day at the Range, an opportunity for media and buyers to experience hands-on testing of products; and the Executive Management Seminar, providing business information to executives and rising managers. Another special event at the show focused on industry’s firearms safety education program Project ChildSafe. The Women of the Gun event brought together women who are influential in helping the program promote its “Own It? Respect It. Secure It.” message and included Olympic shooters, world champions, hunting TV show hosts and many others.

“We are very pleased with the outcome of the 2019 SHOT Show, particularly how our new offerings like the Pop-Up Preview were received,” said NSSF President Joe Bartozzi. “We want all our attendees and sponsors to know that our dedication to listening to their feedback, innovating at SHOT Show and working hard to improve the show experience for everyone will continue.”

Preparations have already begun for next year’s 42nd SHOT Show, which is slated for January 21-24, 2020.

Arex Delta

The Delta is a polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol that has capacity, specs, and dimensions very close to the Glock 19. This is a smart move by Arex, as the Glock 19 has a profile with a broad appeal and is one of the most popular handguns of all time. While it took manufacturers such as Ruger (Security-9) and S&W (M&P Compact 2.0) years to introduce a mid-size model to compete directly with the 19, Arex is getting down to business immediately.

The price further shows that Arex is going to compete: MSRP should be $450 when the gun is introduced. The U.S. market will primarily see safety-free models, but the pictures show that manual safety models will also be available. The safety cutouts will be on the safety-free gun regardless, so this may even be something that a department armorer or gunsmith could possibly add easily via a drop-in lever.
MSRP: $450,

When SIG announced the XCOMPACT, it did not raise many eyebrows. After all, we’ve already seen the full-size P320 X-Five, and X-VTAC, and their smaller cousin, the X-Carry. What would make this different?

Similar to the X-Carry, the XCOMPACT features X-Ray3 night sights and comes optic-ready for the Romeo 1T, Romeo 2, and Deltapoint Pro. The XCOMPACT also has the same flat trigger that the X-series is known for. Essentially, it’s a smaller version, with dimensions just fractionally less than the X-Carry: a 3.6 inch barrel instead of a 3.9, 7.0 inches long instead of 7.4, 5.3 inches high instead of 5.5. Somewhat closer to the size of the P320 Subcompact than the RX Compact, and in the size neighborhood of the Glock 19, it boasts a 15-round flush-fit magazine.

The exciting new feature, though, is a completely re-engineered grip module. The X-series of P320s are known for a grip module radically different from the original P320 – blockier, with a more pronounced beavertail, a detachable magazine well, and a removable weight. Unlike the original P320, the X-series grip came in only one size, and that’s what we saw in all of the X-series to date.

Taurus TX22

For experienced competition shooters or beginners, having a .22 LR training pistol can do wonders for learning and improving the basic fundamentals of handgunning. For 2019, Taurus expanded its handgun lineup with the introductions of the TX22. The TX22 was designed to provide custom-level features, such as an improved trigger, increased magazine capacity, and ergonomics, in a budget-priced platform.

“The TX22 is impressive because it’s truly ready to go from the factory,” said USPSA Grand Master and Taurus Team Shooting Captain Jessie Harrison. “Being able to purchase a pistol that requires zero modification and is match-ready is most appealing as a competitor.”

From the ground up, the Taurus TX22 is built as a platform that’s accessible and comfortable for a range of shooters. The development process started with the frame of the pistol, which emerged into its unique shape through two years of research and design work. At the end, company designers emerged with a unique, ergonomic feel that guides shooters toward an ideal wrist position, as well as fitting a wide range of hand sizes.

Walther Arms Q5 Match SF

The new Q5 Match from Walther is built for the competitive shooter. Built around our award winning PPQ platform, the Q5 Match SF features an optics ready slide that comes with a Trijicon RMR, Leupold Delta Point, and Docter Optics ready mounting plate in addition to the standard competition iron sights. The beautiful new addition to the Q5 Match family features an expertly manufactured precision Steel Frame offering added weight to an already proven platform. Along with a ported slide and the Carl Walther signature ergonomics, and a blue quick defense trigger, the Q5 SF is the flattest shooting model to date.

This is our big time gun. It’s not for everybody,” Osborne said while pointing out the $1,400 price point. “This is not a gun that your normal guy is going to up and grab. This is a gun that you buy to make your friends envious. That pushes the limits of performance when you get down on the range.

The 9mm design replaces the polymer frame and the internal guide rod of the original model by constructing it entirely out of steel. While the change adds an extra pound to the gun, it results in smoother, faster shooting. Osborne explained they tested the differences between the polymer-framed Q5 and the all-steel one with Walther’s pro shooters. Looking at timed-match shots of 20 rounds the average split dropped from 0.75 seconds to 0.4.

Hi-Point ???

Hi-Point will be introducing a new pistol in latter half of 2019. As of the 2019 SHOT Show, it does not actually have an official name yet. The new 9mm high capacity (also new for Hi-Point) compact pistol will have a threaded barrel and many new features. This is not an old model with a few tweaks like the latest version of someone’s 1911. This is an entirely new pistol of a more contemporary design, and yet, it will retain Hi-Point’s affordable pricing, reliability, robust construction, accuracy, and owner following lifetime warranty.

Hi-Point is not a model flipping company and it has been years since Hi-Point’s last new pistol design was unveiled. Hi-Point’s thought process is basically, if it works well and people can afford it, then it works well! However, Hi-Point’s new owner wanted a more contemporary compact high-capacity pistol that is still Hi-Point affordable, robust, reliable and accurate.

This  Stealth prototype stage and our media relations firm could not even get an image of it. However, there will be 3D printed models at the 2019 SHOT Show booth 16144 for examination–bring your 3D printed ammo and we will shoot at 3D printed targets, bet someone does that!

The 6.5 PRC is a magnum version of the 6.5 Creedmoor and has a flatter trajectory and higher impact velocity than the 6.5 Creedmoor. Utilizing moderate powder charges that result in repeatable accuracy, low recoil and high velocities with performance well beyond 1,000 yards, the 6.5 PRC is an excellent caliber for F-Class benchrest shooting and hunting medium to large game.

The Mauser 18 is a big seller here in the United States because of its ultimate reliability, durability and accuracy at an unbeatable price point,” said Christian Socher, CEO of Blaser USA. “We wanted to add the 6.5 PRC chambering as an additional caliber option for those who hunt and shoot at longer ranges.

Thanks to its rugged synthetic stock, the Mauser 18 will withstand daily use in even the harshest hunting environments. A three-position safety allows you to safely carry a round in the chamber without fear of the bolt being nudged out of battery. Escort Dynamax Revolutionizes Operating System

Escort’s Dynamax Semi-Auto Shotgun is a marvel of modern engineering. Designed to be the perfect combination of speed and comfort, the Dynamax is loaded with features that maximize both performance and value.

The Dynamax is outfitted with Escort’s ultramodern, patented Hybrid Cycling System (HCS). It combines the best features from each of the two traditional cycling operating systems, gas and kinetic. With less felt recoil, a shooter acquires targets faster, making follow up shots more effective. Using less gas to cycle the gun also means the Dynamax does not have to be cleaned as frequently. The HCS is easy to break down, making maintenance easier than ever.

CRKT Provoke

Designer Joe Caswell has always been regarded as somewhat of a mad scientist. When he introduced Kinematic technology to the CRKT team, the title was eternalized. One gentle nudge on the upper crossbar activates this completely unique opening mechanism and the blade lunges to life without the user ever losing a firm grasp on the handle. A discrete lever at the base of the handle unlocks the blade, allowing it to retreat into its closed position.

With the advent of Kinematic came its first jaw-dropping application: the Provoke. Modeled after a traditional karambit, the black oxide-finished hawkbill-style blade is forged of a premium D2 steel for high durability and excellent edge retention. The handle is equally as considered. It’s crafted of aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum for supreme toughness, and in true Joe fashion, the pocket clip is also a world’s first—sitting almost completely flush with the handle and likewise activated with light thumb pressure.

How Kinematic Works

Gently nudge the upper crossbar with your thumb—while the rest of your fingers firmly grasp the handle—and the blade lunges to life. Shift the discrete lever at the base of the finger loop and the blade retreats into its closed position.

Mantis Tech launches X10 for Elite Shooters

The X10 is a small, powerful precision sensing device that tracks the minutest of movements, collecting thousands of datapoints per second. Once rail-mounted, it analyzes shooter movements, and sends the data over Bluetooth to the MantisX app for smartphones and tablets. With tens of thousands of shooters using Mantis products, including extensive law enforcement and military adoption, then trend is clear: shooters improve faster when using MantisX.

“The X10 unlocks analysis that was never before quantifiable,” says Engineering Manager Chase Roberts. “Recoil analysis, holster draw analysis, rapid fire, multi-target, shooting on the move, and many more capabilities are included in this powerful product. And we’re just getting started.”

As a sampling, the recoil analysis piece will provide quantification and muzzle tracing for the recoil pattern generated by the firearm. “Not only is the recoil analysis of the X10 immensely valuable for assessing the shooter’s recoil management, but it unlocks the ability to subjectively compare different recoil-mitigating devices and techniques,” continues Roberts. “’Which muzzle brake is most effective? What impact does a flash hider have? Does that gun actually shoot flatter?’ are all questions the philosophical side of the gun industry asks. And now we can finally get answers.”

.50 Caliber Umarex Hammer Produces Power Without Powder!

The Umarex Hammer, being built in the USA, is the most powerful .50 caliber production airgun on the planet and it achieves its speed and power without gun powder.

The Hammer was conceived, designed and engineered in America and is being built in the U.S.A. Its assembly and testing is taking place in Fort Smith, Arkansas within the facility of Umarex USA. “It’s been exciting to see the concept come to fruition right here in the states. Now we’re seeing the parts inspected, measured and verified. The production cell and process has come together and seeing all of this has made it well worth the wait.” said Richard Turner, President of Umarex USA, Inc. “There’s no better team of hunting and shooting enthusiasts and no better air rifle to start building in Fort Smith than the Hammer. The whole process represents the powerful innovation that our German founders started in the 1970s.”

The sheer energy, speed and three full-power shots delivered by the .50 caliber Umarex Hammer is achieved by its proprietary, patent-pending, Lightspeed valve. The innovative engineering used to design this internal mechanism coupled with a .50 caliber, Umarex SpeedBelt ARX 180-grain bullet exceeds 1,130 feet per second. The Ruger 10/22 Air Rifle from UMAREX is true to form except that it is powered by two 12-gram CO2 cartridges instead of the ever-popular .22 LR round. President, Richard Turner, expressed, “The 10/22 has earned its place in shooting history and we couldn’t be more excited that Ruger backed our development of the Ruger 10/22 Air Rifle. Lots of people pulled a trigger for the first time with an airgun and if it wasn’t an air rifle, it was a 22. Very few guns can lay claim to that fact.”

The level of detail in the Ruger 10/22 Air Rifle transcends its looks. “Umarex did a great job in developing the 10/22 Air Rifle,” said Ruger Vice President of Marketing, Rob Werkmeister. “We are truly impressed by the level of authentic detail and craftsmanship incorporated into this airgun, and we are proud to be affiliated with a company that shares our passion of providing quality products and exceptional service for shooters around the world.”

The 10/22 Air Rifle from UMAREX was designed to shoot .177 caliber pellets, the most readily available and most popular selling airgun caliber for recreational shooting. The magazine is authentic in shape and the magazine release pushes forward in authentic fashion giving you the ability to pull the magazine from the receiver. The magazine holds a red, removable rotary clip that accepts 10 flat or round-nosed pellets instead of the traditional .22 LR cartridge and is cleverly held in the magazine by a sliding lever, which allows for the easy exchange of a pre-loaded clip available as an accessory.

 HatsanUSA Vectis

Providing a modern take on an old classic, Hatsan’s new Vectis is a unique, lever-action, Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP) airgun. Reminiscent of a lever-action cowboy rifle, the Vectis is capable of delivering up to 35 shots on a single fill, making it easy to empty a tin of pellets in no time.

Based on the Flash platform, the Vectis maintains the same lightweight characteristics. Weighing 7 lbs., the Vectis features a one-piece receiver and a sturdy, synthetic-polymer QuietEnergy barrel shroud that protects the barrel and dampens noise up to 50%. The airgun’s 165cc fixed-air cylinder is constructed from lightweight, strong aluminum alloy. A combo optics rail is machined into the receiver and continues down the length of the barrel shroud to provide shooters with 17 inches of uninterrupted rail space. The Vectis is capable of accepting both 11mm and 22mm mounts.

Just like the rifles of the old west, the sturdy trigger guard acts as the rifle’s cocking lever. Simply rotate the lever 45 degrees to cock the rifle. Follow-up shots are quick and easy, thanks to the S/Roto Index Magazine. Each of the 2 included magazines can hold up to 14 pellets. A single-shot tray is also included for those who might want to precision-load pellets individually. The Vectis is available in.177, .22, and .25 caliber.

The Trijicon MRO with green dot continues the legendary dependability of the MRO and features an adjustable 2.0 MOA green dot.
