SCCY Pulls No Questions Warranty — Why You Should be Thankful

SCCY industries previously offered a “No Questions Asked’ warranty, which was certainly worthy of praise from the gun community. You have to have a lot of faith and great customer service to go that route. However, it seems it comes with its downside too, and a few bad actors have caused SCCY to modify its policy to protect the rest of us. This is a case of a corporate responsibility over profits and we should all support SCCY’s decision.

Here’s what happened. SCCY was so supportive of the firearms community that it offered to replace stolen guns under it no questions asked warranty. The bad actors? Well, let’s just say they were not very likely to have been—or in any way like—you or me. At least not according to authorities. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) noticed a pattern of SCCY’s pistols being involved at crime scenes. That, in itself, was not what piqued the authorities interest. Instead, it was the low “time to crime” associated with SCCY’s pistols. In other words, the time between when the pistols were purchased to being used in crimes was much lower than the competition.

SCCY took the issue seriously and did a little soul searching from within. What started out as one of the greatest ways a manufacturer could support the Second Amendment may have been exploited by criminals. “Further research indicated that this phenomena may be an unintended consequence of our theft warranty,” said SCCY in the official statement.

“We realize that the majority of people who have contacted SCCY in regard to stolen firearms are honest law-abiding firearms owners and this is another instance where a few bad apples have spoiled it for honest citizens,” continued the statement. “However, in the interest of the public’s safety and welfare, we have no choice but to abolish this program.” So what is the upshot? SCCY will no longer replace your gun if it was stolen. However, SCCY is still standing behind its product in just about every other way, and that is still one helluva warranty! SCCY still offers a serious lifetime warranty covering its firearms for not just its original owner, but the lifetime of the firearm, for any factory defects. I like that SCCY is still standing behind its products almost as much as its demonstrated commitment to the safety of law abiding gun owners and citizens over profits.

  1. I acquired a SCCY pistol with a missing discharge pin. I didnt realize they had this lifetime warranty but was very pleased with the customer service. Called and they are sending a replacement. Now I am highly considering buying one of the new RD models.

  2. Although it was generous of Sccy to replace your gun if it was stolen, but I thought that’s what home owners insurance was for? Does homeowners and renters insurance not cover firearms?

  3. I would think those of us that purchased under the FULL Warranty, would be Grandfathered in. I went with SCCY SOLELY on the warranty. I LOVED MY TAURUS 9, but SCCY gained me as a customer on the contractual promise that it would replaced if stolen. What consideration is being made for customers that don’t try to take advantage of policy?

  4. How do i know if my legally purchased gun is under warranty. Didn’t we have to fill out a card when we bought the gun? How do I make sure? Thank you.

  5. And when somebody whom only can afford a CPX-2 get their gun stolen, then what? Think before you policy make!

  6. I’m not here to argue for or against SCCY’s originally warranty policy (which I took into consideration before making the purchase of my CPX-2). I like the gun very much and wanted a DAO 9mm suitable for EDC AND for locking in a checked bag when traveling. I bought a solid gun that, if stolen from my luggage, will not leave me sadly bemoaning that fact which I might be doing if it was my G30 or pre-ban Walther PPK that went missing.

    Rather, my question is this: What is SCCY going to do for those of use who purchased the gun while the warranty (theft) was in effect? The purchase was a contract between me and SCCY and the dealer from whom I purchased the gun. Tell me how this works that one party can unilaterally change the contract without consideration to the other.

    This is no different that going out and buying a car with a 100,000 mile unlimited warranty on the drive train with no deductible. You jump on the deal and drive your new car home and thirty days later get a letter from the manufacturer which, instead of congratulating you on your purchase, informs you that they’ve decided that the 100,000 mile warranty was a bad idea and they are cancelling it. You now have a 5,000 mile warranty and a $500 deductible.

    Dave, have you checked with SCCY to see how they reconcile this change? I’m no lawyer, but I think that the only possible way they could get out of honoring the warranty with those who purchased when it was in effect would be if things changed and it was an impossibility to perform. That means the company is bankrupt and out of business or it is made a violation of law to perform a specific act (replace a stolen gun). Since they are not bankrupt nor is it against the law to indemnify a victim of a theft, they are stuck – legally.

    Really? Resonsability over profit?

    The majority of us have never heard about the theft provision. How is not replacing guns going to lessen profits?

    Two for one guns sales cost more than a one gun sale.

    Will they lose sales due to the lose of the theft warranty?

    I doubt most anyone but those who bought the gun were using it ever heard of it. I think 99% of their sales are all the price point, Not a theft warranty, so I think it’s more about trying to not be associated as a crime gun and save them profits by not replacing guns for free.

  8. They should have never had to theft provision in their warranty. You have both the moral hazard as well as the morale hazard to deal with. Dishonest people are going to take advantage and make for claims that were not stolen. To me, the morale hazard is worse. The gun owner might not be as careful with protecting their gun from theft or loss if they know it will be replaced without cost to them. It’s like a car owner not bothering to remove the keys from a car because it will be paid for if it is stolen.

  9. What? I didn’t even know they had such a warranty, but then I never read all the stuff that comes with a new gun. I have been carrying the CPX2 for a few years now and my only complaint is about the iron sites. They made an otherwise sweat-proof gun, yet the sites are just rusting away. That’s it. . .my only complaint. After long periods of concealment, I occasionally test fire a magazine or two at the range and (as miserable as DAO’s are) it has never misfired or jammed. I even got the pink on for my wife. I don’t really care for polymer, DAO guns, but this inexpensive. U.S.-made piece is perfect for concealed carry. It addressed all the issues I had with the previous LC9.

I had a CPX-2 for over a year and only had a problem one time out of 800+ rounds to ever FTF or FTE and the only reason was the extractor was bent, called up the company and sent it to them for a free replacement and only took 6 days to get it back. MY Experience with SCCY was 100% satisfactory.

  11. Our shop acquired two pistols for testing, a CPX-1 in 2009 and a CPX-2 in 2010. A major concern we had with the CPX-1 was its safety, which was awkward to operate, superfluous, and unreliable (it would sometimes engage during firing). In 2011 SSCY announced they had added a lip to the CPX-1 frame to prevent accidental engagement of the manual safety. Presumably, this fixed that particular problem, but we believe the deletion of the manual safety on the CPX-2 was a superior solution. Every shooter has his own opinion regarding what constitutes a proper grip or grip angle, but the seven shooters who tested our CPX-1 found the finger grooves and general shape of the grip made the pistol uncomfortable to hold and shoot. As a follow-on experiment we eliminated these grooves and thinned the grip and trigger guard of the CPX-1 in an effort to create a more comfortable hold, but the manufacturer expressed no interest in these alterations. On the positive side, unlike the Kel-tec P-11, loaded magazines did not rattle in the CPX-1 or CPX-2, but the CPX-2 magazines proved extremely difficult to load (even with a loading tool we could only get eight rounds in the magazines). The trigger pull of both SCCYs was notably lighter than that of the Kel-Tec P11, and the SCCY, perhaps as a result of this, proved twice as accurate at the P11. The SCCY was offered with more accessories for less cost, making it a bargain even by Kel-Tec standards. Regrettably, the CPX-2 had a bad habit of misfiring. Blog research at the time uncovered other cases of CPX-1 and CPX-2 owners reporting light primer strikes that resulted in misfires. SCCY never responded to our concerns, nor did they offer to repair or replace our defective firearm. For these reasons we have never recommend the SCCY pistols to any of our customers.

  12. I think its absurd that they would change their policy over a few “Bad Actors” and leverage from the good old ATF. Me and several of my friends purchased these firearms based on this policy. The only fair way for SCCY to do this is to grandfather all previous owners or offer them a full refund. As for individuals falsifying thefts, ATF should be going after them not forcing SCCY to change their policy.

  13. I had to sell my 9mm SCCY. The external safety drew blood from my thumb too often. The recoil was excessive too. The external safety is too close to my thumb. Has anyone else had this problem?

  14. I don’t have a problem with this. Can’t really expect a company to warranty you against theft of the item in question. Since they stand behind it in workmanship, performance, etc. that is all you can really ask for.

  15. So, no more “buy one, get one free deals”? Good thing! A lifetime warranty is a great benefit that in and of itself. But, free theft replacement? Glad they were putting customer satisfaction above profit, but the name of the game IS PROFIT. With the lifetime warranty, they will have a solid following never the less. Just hopefully they are produced in a gun friendly state.
