NSSF: $25 Million More to Anti-Gun Group Will Fund a Lot of Astroturf

100 dollar bills

In today’s environment, with multi-millionaires and billionaires throwing money at politically motivated causes they favor, social media is being used to create the appearance that more Americans support a cause or political view than the numbers really bear out. This is not only deceptive, it is dangerous. Here is the full scoop from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).Everytown for Gun Safety and its billionaire founder and funder, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, have pledged to spend $25 million to prevent national concealed carry reciprocity from becoming law on Capitol Hill, to increase their gun control efforts in state capitols and to oppose pro-Second Amendment candidates in the rapidly approaching 2018 midterm elections. It’s a whole lot of astroturf.

100 dollar bills We know the good news. We have elected a President who has pledged to respect our citizens’ right to keep and bear arms, and we have a new Supreme Court associate justice who has said he will respect the Heller decision reaffirming the individual right to keep and bear arms.

As a result, gun owners may think that they can rest easy. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. The true believers of the gun control movement will never rest. We have said this before, but it bears repeating. We can never let down our guard.

Underpinning so much of the gun controllers’ arguments, and this is particularly evident in their fight against national concealed carry reciprocity, is the conflation of the legal ownership of firearms with the criminal misuse of guns. It’s a dishonest astroturf tactic that appeals to a political base that has no familiarity with firearms, but it does not ring true.

Just as the gun control groups inveighed against the increase in concealed carry permits on a state-by-state basis, they now argue that national reciprocity will result in increased crime from sea to shining sea.

Yet, citizens with concealed carry permits are not just respectful of our laws. They are, in fact, more law-abiding than the general public. A Texas A&M University study,—perhaps the most comprehensive to date—found “CHL (Concealed Handgun Licensing) licensing rates “did not have a significant, negative or positive, effect on subsequent crime rates.” Everytown would like federal and state legislators to believe that it is a national organization made up of tens of thousands of members. It is not. It is Astroturf. And a lot of people know it. Investigative journalist Sharyl Atkinson conducted an informal survey last summer and found that the Bloomberg organizations Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Everytown earned the number one position on the “Top 10 Astroturfers” list.

“Astroturfers often disguise themselves and publish blogs, write letters to the editor, produce ads, start non-profits, establish Facebook and Twitter accounts, edit Wikipedia pages or simply post comments online to try to fool you into thinking an independent or grassroots movement is speaking. They use their partners in blogs and in the news media in an attempt to lend an air of legitimacy or impartiality to their efforts,” Atkinson wrote. “The whole point of astroturf is to try to convince you there’s widespread support for or against an agenda when there’s not.” The Bloomberg organizations are big astroturf efforts with big money behind them. But we don’t think they’re a match for our members combined with America’s gun owners–our customers–who can see right through the public relations shenanigans. Our Second Amendment rights are backed by real grassroots Americans, not paid staffers and astroturf. We will be heard.

  1. Who are the ones ultimately responsible for the loss of our Civil Rights?
Have we the American gun owners not relinquished them in the name of comfort and as Ben Franklins words do not deserve them.
Sending your bucks to financial corporate lawyers of the NRA does not protect them, they who have gradually bargained them away, until we now find an oligarchy rich enough to purchase those “Rights”
What part of Infringed do we not understand.
What has been done to one U.S. citizen is a blow upon all U. S. citizens, and just because you say today we have the “little r right to defend ourselves alone shows a complete disregard for why the 2nd Amendment was so stridently demanded at our nations founding.

  2. I enjoy these articles and the comments they elicit. The author is correct in that “We can never let down our guard.” Please remember though there is more than one wall in the castle. I would encourage everyone reading these articles to become equally educated and involved to the greatest extent possible as to their rights and responsibilities as jurors. 3. When Bloomberg left NY he took all the cops that protected him. They are now on his payroll at the tune of $150k a year, so no need for bloom berg to get a conceal carry permit. As long as he is safe, that is all he cares about, to hell with the rest of us. We need to stick together to beat him and all the anti gun grabbers out to disarm us. Next, is getting rid of Cuomo and his so called safeact in NY.

    1. Cuomo is just a Bloomberg clone. The current administration and congress needs to pass a bill requiring EVERYONE (POTUS, SCOTUS, Congress, Hollyweird elites, fake news media, etc.) to live within the bounds of any of their own restrictions that they manage to pass, including Gun bans, health care, retirement, etc. If they manage to ban guns, there will be no personal armed guards allowed. Let them become victims of their own agenda and they will quickly join our side.

  4. Has anyone else noticed the new meme the anti-gun crowd has come up with? I’ve seen several TV shows, the latest being Designated Survivor, that use the term “unlicensed gun dealers,” as being a loophole in the gun laws that needs to be closed. I’m not aware that one can be a gun dealer and be “unlicensed.” or am I missing something?

    1. @ Retired Navy Spook,

You are not missing a thing… There is no such thing as a legal “unlicensed gun dealer” created by the so-called “loopholes” in the gun laws. The word “dealer” infers that an individual is regularly “engaged in the business” of selling guns, which by law requires they be licensed.

So whenever these anti-gunners refer to an “unlicensed gun dealer” they are unwittingly alluding to the seedy illicit underground market, but think they are referring to the occasional lawful sale that is allowed between two individuals – which does not require a license.

Also interchangeably misspoken is the term “private gun dealer” which is often inappropriately used to reference the same unlicensed (but legal) one-time sale of a firearm between parties.

While there truly is such a thing as the “private gun dealer”, they must still be licensed and simply use the term to denote they usually only sell custom made weaponry to exclusive clientele.

Good catch, and thanks for bringing attention to the rise of yet another abused term by the anti-gunners. Such awareness puts us on alert to be on the lookout for the use of such terms so we can call them out on it and shut them down early.

    2. That “unlicensed gun dealer” that they are trying push is me or you, when we give that first 22 rifle to our grandchild or sell that old 38 to our neighbor, who is legal to own it. It is just a push for universal background checks. Which is a precursor for a national gun registry. Which is what the Nazis use to collect all the guns from the Jews, right before they march them to death camps.

  5. I don’t Know if the members of these anti gun groups are, but I firmly believe bloomberg is a communist or a fachist . Gun Control is not about guns but rather about PEOPLE CONTROL ! And is what all these anti gun LEADERS are about . POWER!! They will do anything to gain control , from obama’s “fundamentaly change this country” to the clinton crime machine, to soros’ evil. Some how we need to wake people up, before it is too late!

  6. Let him keep wasting his money – he’s not getting very far based on the last election. Here in Pa we have to get rid of Casey and then the Senate will at least be straightened out.

  7. Just like fake news, eventually the truth gets exposed. One thing they’ll never be able to fake is an outnumbered offset to the millions of real pro-gun advocates that should call or write their Senators and Representatives in support of national concealed carry reciprocity. Let’s make this happen folks. It’s easier than you’d think to drop your rep a line on the topic.

    1. Exactly right. You can google your state reps and senators, go to their websites for contact info, and usually shoot them an email directly from their website. Or call the congress’s D.C. switchboard and ask for the person by name.

  8. Michael Bloomberg will never give up trying to create gun control. Another thing he won’t give up is his armed bodyguards. What a hypocrite.
