Keeping Surplus Military Weapons Off Our Streets?

No More M1 Garands

President Obama has once again targeted legal gun owners with his latest Executive Action by targeting the importation of what he referred to as “military grade” weapons. The Executive Action bars the importation of military-grade weapons sold or donated to allies by private entities. Over 250,000 of these weapons have been brought home to the U.S. since 2005. Many were imported from South Korea; after WWII we sold thousands of Garands to South Korea. The White House has argued that some of these weapons end up back on the street. No More M1 Garands We are not talking about M4s with grenade launchers or M249s. The law would primarily affect antiquated, World War II-era weapons. Far from “street guns” or Saturday Night Specials, these are guns purchased primarily by collectors. In the case of the M1 Garand, it is also extremely popular in service weapon matches and the Civilian Marksmanship Program. There isn’t a high rate of fire or extended magazine. They are simply collectable as a piece of American history by those who either used the weapons while serving our country or in many cases the children or grandchildren of veterans looking for a connection to relative. The National Rifle Association called on Obama to stop focusing his efforts on inhibiting the rights of law-abiding gun owners. “The Obama administration has once again completely missed the mark when it comes to stopping violent crime,” said NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam. The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) is calling on American gun owners to sign an online petition to the White House seeking reversal of President Barack Obama’s Executive Action against importation of military firearms produced here and sent overseas. “We want the White House to know that this decision was wrong and that it affects the wrong people,” stated Alan Gottlieb chairman of the CCRKBA. “These guns have really no value except to collectors, reenactors and target shooters. We’re talking about M-1 Garands that were used in World War II and Korea, guns that are decades old and have no history of being used in criminal activity.” CCRKBA Logo Gottlieb said all the normal processes had occurred to allow these historic firearms to be brought back home, but the White House has “derailed the effort.” While there is pending legislation to prevent this in the future, this needs to be undone because of the far-reaching impact it could have on all kinds of firearms with significant historic value. The CCRKBA is calling on American gun owners to sign an online petition to the White House seeking reversal of President Barack Obama’s executive action against importation of military firearms produced here and sent overseas. The timing could not be better given the recent successful recall campaigns in Colorado. CCRKBA’s Alan Gottlieb said the goal is to garner at least 100,000 signatures but he would like to double that number to send a message that the president’s action was heavy-handed and unnecessary. 1. They can’t end the CMP. The CMP is provided by statute to fill the requirement to train the militia.
Remember, there is the organized militia, aka the National Guard, then there is the unorganized militia, every able bodied male between the age of 18 and 45 and prior service men to age 60.
When they split the militia, there remained an unfilled requirement per the Constitution to train the unorganized militia. That was filled by the CMP.

  2. This nonsense shows very clearly the ignorance of the liberal progressives. At this point, they are happy to do anything that negatively affects gun ownership. If they can’t get away with negating our 2nd amendment, they will find a way to limit our ability to own weapons, whether they be for actual use or for collections. All the while, they miss the point. Law abiding gun owning citizens are not the problem. It’s the criminal element and the mentally ill out there, as evidenced most recently by the killings at the Washington naval yard. These people will not be deterred by any legislation what-so-ever! This is NOT about guns, it’s about CONTROL!

  3. He is a tyrant pushing an agenda and to bypass Congress. In addition to the video of Holder stating it was possible to brainwash people into thinking guns are bad also look up his involvement in an armed 5 day takeover of the Columbia College ROTC Office while he attended. Now that is extremist!

It only took about 3% of the population to refuse King George’s orders to confiscate firearms. We have a hell of a lot more than that now and our government knows an armed populace cannot be controlled and slaughtered, they have to disarm us first. Be a III%’er and honor your oath to the Constitution!

Eisenhower warned of a Military-Industrial Complex, JFK was killed a week after he stated that he would expose a plan to enslave every man, woman and child…and Reagan warned of the coming New World Order. Our Founding Fathers saw this…the globalists have to tear down our Bill of Rights first. The beauty of the 2A is that we won’t know we *need* it until it is time…

  4. why havent the words ‘IMPEACHMENT’ been spoken about when it comes to this most worthless of American presidents?? he has done nothing for this country except give us high gas prices, more taxes and LOTS of anxiety, mental anguish and frustration!

  5. ” instead: prepare. your mind, your soul, your weaponry.”

Because, those hold up so well against B-52 bombs, AC-130 Spectre fire, A-10 fire, indirect fire, smart bombs, missiles, drone carried missiles, etc. :/

The ultimate weapon is most often utterly silence when used, devastating in use and while it does have a caliber, it has no ammunition requirements.
It is one’s own mind, with an outlook that no problem can be overcome or worked around.

  6. he’s a treasonous traitor and is no longer valid or relevant; fk him.

    i’m fed up with petitions, i’m not asking an evil person to stop being evil;
instead i lie in wait for them to show up.

seriously, you’re wasting your time if you keep letting them waste your time. instead: prepare. your mind, your soul, your weaponry.

  7. The president is a terrorist himself period. He has his motives and we need to derail him before he derails this country and his brothers from Iraq Afghanistan and Syria come one in and rename this country theirs look through the smoke and mirrors everyone

  8. No, folks…. they aren’t that dumb. They know EXACTLY what they are doing! They expect people like us to roll over and play dead. They don’t believe that you have the guts to do anything about it. They don’t believe that we get this information to try to do anything about it. Worse yet, they don’t care. They are above it all.

  9. A couple of small nit picks, John Bibb.

The M14 was the M1 Garand done right. It literally was a remodel of the M1 Garand. Given a choice, I’d take the M14 over the M1 Garand, though I’d also stick with semiautomatic due to control issues.

If it’s an effective man killer, it should be a good deer rifle for whitetail deer. Mule deer require a bit more power due to their larger size. The only nit pick here is regarding the reason for the military to use non-expanding ammunition. It wasn’t the Geneva Convention that required that, as the Geneva Convention was about the treatment of prisoners. What munitions may and may not be used in combat is covered by the Hague Convention.

HI D.B.C.–good history. The M1 Garand was / is a great main battle rifle. Most of the gun grabbers are too stupid to realize how much deadlier the M1 Garand is–most never had any Military or shooting experience. I never shot it–we used the very similar M14 in Army basic training–heavy, high powered, excellent long range accuracy. Overkill for intermediate range work. Semi-auto only due to the control problems on subsequent shots. The Army BAR is more properly classified as an automatic rifle due to it’s full power cartridge, long range, and heavy weight.

As far as deer hunting–the M1 Carbine was intended as a light weight medium range man killer. Most states don’t allow hunting with rifles that fail to deliver more than 1000 ft. lbs. energy at 100 yards, and require expanding bullets–not full metal case ammo like the Military must use to conform to the Geneva Convention. An M1 Carbine with soft point ammo is better at killing people and animals–the FMC bullets go right through the target.

  11. The M-1 doesn’t fit any of the requirements for it to be labeled an assault weapon. The Browning BAR hunting rifle line is more dangerous than the M-1.

Rocketman your history is a bit off. The rifle was invented by a prison convict and the army bought it as a weapon for officers to carry to give them something that shot further and more accurately than the .45 and was easier to carry than the Garand. It performed so poorly in combat that there were congressional hearings on it after the war. I personally saw a large white tail buck shot 18 times (he had a 30 rd mag) with an M-1 Carbine at the initial range of 10 yards. When the first chest shot didn’t kill it he just started squeezing the trigger as fast as he could. After that I just relegated my Carbine to gravel pit plinking. Still it was a fun gun to shoot.

  12. Marvin said it all in comment #1.. I could not add more without the risk of having my comment blocked.. If ya’all can read between the lines, I think you can get my drift..

I think that the gun grabbers are a lot more worried about the WW2 / Korean War era .30 cal M1 Carbine than they are about the M1 Rifle. It was our first attempt at an assault weapon with the M2 full auto version. It killed many WW2 Japanese soldiers at night with the first crude IR night sight. And it is a very good weapon up to 150 yards or so. Cheap ammo–60 cents a shot, and with soft point ammo a good defense gun. Very light and simple. Far better than a submachine gun or pistol at intermediate ranges.

  14. I tried to sign the petition, but the site required registration. I’m not interested in providing my personal information to the gun-grabber-in-chief. My local liberal newspaper, Tampa Bay times, has ignored this story. Perhaps you could send a news release about your efforts to reverse this outrageous grandstanding feel-good order.

  15. Fellow Veterans: Well, what do you expect from a man who never served day one in military uniform? A man who was not even in JROTC? A man who had to go to a class to learn military etiquette and even how to properly salute? A man who has nothing more than the TITLE on loan as “Commander-In-Chief”, a political distinction, at best. This man does not understand how Veterans hold these “tools of the trade” in high regard, like a partner, a friend, a loyal Comrade who was by your side and never let you down when the sh*t hit the fan. The man who currently sits in the WH is a two dollar politician from Chicago who will be remembered at best for taking the economy down to its lowest valley and making the American generation of entitlement movement even larger than when he took office. He does not understand the American middle class!

  17. Don’t forget the influence of the commie Eric Holder. See the video of Holder at www(dot)buckeyefirearms(dot)org, watch Holder’s lips and hear his words that Americans should be brainwashed.

  18. Get this idiot out of office!!! He is ruining our country. Anyone care to join me for a revolution to get “our” country back? It is suppose to be “By the people, for the people”, not “By the government, for the government”!

  19. What it seems to actually be is a full out assault upon our Constitutional rights.
Indeed, the SCOTUS made a frightening decision regarding the fifth amendment. First, it called the rights granted under the fifth amendment privileges, something that can be revoked! Then, one had to declare that right in rather narrow conditions, only when one is under arrest.

Our Bill of Rights is now becoming a Bill of Optionals.

  20. He’s not an idiot. He’s a cold calculated DEDICATED leftist authoritarian…This import ban make me want to cry. So many Garands out there…

  21. It really makes me wonder exactally what this idiot is trying to acomplish? I dont beleve the guy is that dumb, or is someone else writing these executive orders? The way it’s written it starts off sounding like importing full auto weapons parts kits and putting together some type of class three weapon but after reading it completely it’s all about antiques? dont make any sense to me.
