Ka-Bar’s zombie line of knives debuted at the 2012 SHOT Show. Due to the popularity of the line, they extended it with further options in blades including two folders. Many people balked at the “zombie green” (lime green) handles, but others who bought knives in the line boasted about how easy the knives were to find when dropped or lost in a bug-out bag. All of the Ka-Bar ZK knives include a set of black handles with screws, if you are so inclined to switch them out. I don’t think zombies probably see color, so why not just leave the lime green ones on. When you use any of these knives, you are going for effectiveness, not stealth.
The first thing I noticed right out of the box is the Chop Stick’s weight. It weighs 1.25 pounds! With that kind of weight and a wide arch swing, you are bound to severe a zombie’s skull right down the middle. Even for someone like me who doesn’t have the upper body strength, the wide arch swing with enough velocity makes the Chop Stick a deadly weapon.
As I was inspecting the knife, I had a friend tell me it appeared that the Chop Stick was not practical for day-to-day, but the ZK line is especially good for survival. In fact, the Chop Stick is similar to a WWII Air Force knife that soldiers carried in case they had to cut themselves out of a cockpit.
The handles are GFN-PA66, which is a glass-filled nylon that is strong and durable. The grip on the knife is a little awkward to get used to for my small hands, but the small bumpy texture isn’t uncomfortable. There is a clip on the end of the knife that won’t allow your hand to slip off the grip if the handle gets too wet from zombie goo. Though the grip is a little too large for me, I can still get a firm, secure grip on the handle.
The full tang blade has an interesting shape and is 9 inches long with a matte black coating on it. The SK5 steel blade is sharp right out of the box.
The Chop Stick includes the Zombie Acheron skeleton knife with a 3-1/8-inch fixed blade. The knife is steel and has a skeleton handle.
It also includes a gigantic holster that fits both the Chop Stick and the Acheron, and has an extra-large pocket that will fit other small survival gear such as a fire starter. The lime green lanyard included reminds me of thick shoestring.
The holster is way too large for my 5 foot-5-inch frame. Packed to the hilt, and attached to my belt, it really weighs me down. Guys have solved this problem by attaching the knife’s holster to their chest rig. The holster has MOLLE-compatible webbing on the back.
The Chop Stick comes with a limited lifetime warranty. If you aren’t going to be fighting zombies any time soon, the Chop Stick chops wood quite well.
