H&K Introduces New Competition AR-15 for 2015

Heckler & Koch Competition Model AR-15 black rifle

Using the HK MR556A1 as the platform to build a competitive rifle along with input from many competitive shooters, Heckler & Koch developed the MR556A1 Competition Model for the casual and most demanding competitive shooter both. Ideal for 3-gun matches, the MR556A1 Competition Model adds the most critical fundamental enhancements to the standard MR rifle.

Foremost among these additions are the new 14-inch Modular Rail System (MRS). Lightweight and easy to customize, the MRS allows shooters to add sections of accessory rails where desired. It also keeps weight down while presenting a more ergonomic and comfortable handguard surface when compared to rectangular full rail systems.

Built for competition and 3 gunners, Heckler & Koch’s latest foray into the competition world, the HK MR556A1 features a HK/OSS compensator, 30-round polymer magazine, keyhole attachment, two-stage MR556A1 trigger, 14-inch MRS, Magpul CTR buttstock, and ambidextrous safety and selector lever.

The extended 14-inch length MRS does not touch the barrel, preserving the “free-floating” barrel-to-handguard feature favored by competitive shooters and present in all MR rifles. HK also includes an extended magazine release for quick magazine changes.

An innovative compensator by Operator Suppressor Systems Inc. (OSS) replaces the standard MR flash hider. OSS is a leader in the development and manufacturing of sound and flash suppression using technologies originated in those fields to create a unique and highly effective compensator.

A Magpul CTR buttstock replaces the standard MR stock. Easy to adjust, the CTR stock moves smoothly along the receiver extension locking securely into position. Profile and weight make this buttstock ideal for competitive shooters. The MR556A1 Competition Model—including a German-made long service barrel produced by Heckler & Koch’s famous cold hammer forging technology and HK’s famous piston operating system—retains all other standard features of the HK MR556A1.

Found on HK firearms like the G36 and HK416, this system uses a gas piston and pusher rod in place of the more common hollow gas tube normally employed in direct impingement AR-style rifles.

The HK system improves reliability and reduces operator cleaning and maintenance as literally no carbon fouling or propellant gases direct back into the weapon beyond the gas cylinder located above the barrel. HK is producing the Competition model in the USA, using joint U.S. and German manufacturing capabilities and components—combining the design innovations of the USA and Germany into a superior product. Perhaps best of all, the HK MR556A1 is covered by Heckler & Koch’s lifetime warranty.

  1. It looks like Heckler & Koch won the US. Army M4 Carbine Competition again in 2014. With FNH-USA 2nd, Remington Defense 3rd, Adcor Defense 4th, and Colt Defense 5th…

  2. My first impression it that I could build a comparable rifle for 1k & have 2K left over for the optics pkg. While it may be a quality piece, there are plenty of quality parts on the market which do not add up to their price point.
