The FBI Violent Crime Stats Prove Gun Sales Up, Crime Down in 2014!

FBI Violent Crime vs NSSF-Adjusted NICS

Regardless the lies, half-truths and misleading political speeches, the numbers speak the loudest. And what do the numbers say? Gun sales were up again in 2014 and violent crime went down. In fact, although you wouldn’t know it by listening to the Left’s stump speeches or the Democratic National Committee’s debate, the trend of law-abiding citizens with guns has skyrocketed while the violent crime rate has trended down has been the reality for many years now. 2014’s numbers are just the latest example of this phenomenon.

National Shooting Sports Foundation Logo However, mass shootings, the big city violence of Chicago, New York, Detroit or New Orleans is all the mainstream media cares to focus on. How much time will they give this news? The media’s motto is, “If it bleeds, it leads!” However, the only thing bleeding from the FBI’s latest statistics for 2014 are the mistruths and spin by the gun control crowd.

With the elections around the corner, and many politicians on the stump bashing the Second Amendment every chance they get, we need to get this message out to the masses—loud and proud.

Here’s what the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) had to say. As NSSF President Steve Sanetti explains in this NSSF blog post, violent crime has continued its long-term decline even as a record-breaking number of firearms have been purchased by the law-abiding American population.

GUN SALES UP, CRIME DOWN…

You’re really not to blame if you haven’t heard that violent crime declined again in 2014. After all, the news media generally do not report on the release of these annual statistics from the country’s leading federal crime-fighting agency.

This month, the FBI released the 2014 edition of Crime in the United States, and it revealed that the estimated number of reported violent crimes decreased 0.2 percent when compared with 2013. And the estimated number of property crimes decreased 4.3 percent from 2013 levels.

Homicides with firearms in 2014 were down 3.9 percent on a year-over-year basis. Consistent with previous years of this ongoing work, the vast majority of these murders were committed with handguns, although all categories of gun murders were lower. Rifles of all kinds were involved in just 3 percent of gun murders in 2014, lower than the number of deaths attributable to knives, blunt objects, and even fists or feet.

While the one-year numbers may not look that dramatic, they are nonetheless important because they serve to illustrate the long-term, 20-year downward trend in crime in the United States is continuing.

FBI Violent Crime vs NSSF-Adjusted NICS
The NSSF is the trade association for America’s firearms industry.
The NSSF’s mission: To promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports.
Using NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) data over a ten-year period since 2005, the best proxy we have for firearms sales, we see a 74.1 percent increase in background checks even as the violent crime fell 16.2 percent. The 15-year trend is even more dramatic, showing an 81.8 percent increase in NICS numbers even as violent crime fell 18.2 percent.

Put simply, more firearms in the hands of the mostly law-abiding American population have not yielded an increase in crime.

Not seeing much (or any) mainstream news coverage of the newly released crime stats? Well, we’re not surprised and if you read our blog on even a periodic basis, it’s no surprise to you either. We’ve covered this topic before. In fact, the motion infographic that we released more than a year ago, remains accurate in content and direction.

The gun control lobby gets considerable attention for arguing that there is an “epidemic of gun violence” extant in the land. Every death due to the criminal misuse of a firearm is a tragedy. We would never suggest otherwise. But two decades of a steady, dramatic decrease in such crimes is the opposite of an epidemic. It would be nice if the mainstream media would report on these facts.

  1. This comes as no surprise to anyone who is an informed person. It’s the stupid Libs who don;t get this, because they are slaves to the media.

    1. They are just brainwashed liberals. The only way to defeat them is to over vote them. So come on you second amenders, get off your asses and vote.

  2. You ask: How can we help get the message out? Simple: publish a table of information and a graph that we can download and attach to emails to our local newspaper editors. Your fine article and informative table and graph did not make that possible’ you need to make that easy.

  3. Everybody continues to get worked up without moving the debate. There is only one way to get a deaf idealog to stand aside. VOTE them down. We are millions of responsible legal firearm owners. We need to stand up, stand strong and stand together and stand in line at the ballot box. So, all in? Lets get registered, lets get informed and lets VOTE!!! Get the word out to family, friends and associates and lets jam at the polls. VOTE!! Pass the word!!!

  4. Well this is all just wonderful however NONE of this makes any difference to the Administration and his army of gun grabbers. They don’t deal in facts, truth or stats. Gun control has nothing to do with safety it is all about controlling the masses.

  5. I am a life long defender of the 2nd Amendment. I am a staunch conservative when it comes to our Constitution and the principle of separation of church, state and corporations. I am vehemently opposed to the proposition of corporate personhood and unfettered money in politics. I served 4 years in the US Navy 67/71.

However, I am what I believe is a radical conservative centrist liberal. I loath the foamers who perform on command for the knee-jerk frenetic political zombies on both ends of the political spectrum. I am an old, old, old school Democrat. No matter the rote recitation of political correctness spewed forth by the extreme right, or the extreme left, I assure you that they don’t have a love of country superior to any citizens of the radical center.

So, my suggestion is: Cast off the foam at the mouth babbling extreme right and left. Work with fact, reality and acknowledgement that this nation is made up of a vast, vast, vast majority of law abiding, caring, generous, loving people who want a government that works, is rational, principled, caring, generous and that fights for the rights of all its human citizens without regard for gender, skin color, religious preference, or nation of origin. Cast off the No-No-Noers-2 the death, who rather destroy this country than find a way to live and work together with justice for every man, woman and child.

    1. I’m with you Mr. Foley. If you still identify as a Democrat (and I’m not saying you do) then the Democrat party has left you. The Republican party has left me and turned into a big government, big spending automaton. I’m with you; government at all levels runs for the sake of government, not the citizen. Unfortunately, for both of us “government that works” is an oxymoron.

    2. Being a Tea Party supporter, fiscal conservative and Constitutionalist, I am here to tell everyone that I am a Patriotic American. I along with my fellow patriots peacefully assemble and petition our government. We exercise our right to free speech and we don’t understand why our government tries to stop us. I am not here as a serf or vassal. I will not beg those who perceive themselves as our lords for mercy. I am an American citizen and are more than willing telling our government that they’ve forgotten their place.

It’s not their responsibility to look out for our well being and monitor our speech. It’s not their right to assert their agenda. The post that they occupy exists to preserve American liberty. They’ve sworn to perform that duty and have failed !!!

No one but God can dictate policy to me and my family and I will do whatever it takes to secure my liberty and the liberty of my fellow patriots. Stand in my way try and usurp my rights or otherwise enslave me, you should be prepared to back your actions up with your life as I am prepared to do likewise!!

As I am a Legal immigrant and a “Naturalized Citizen”. I take my liberty and OUR Constitution Seriously and don’t understand why others are so eager to give up their constitutionally guaranteed rights to a tyrannical government who obviously doesn’t care for its people!!

Once those rights are gone you can NEVER get them back!!

    3. @Richard Foley, I agree with you. Both of the major parties have gotten way too far to the right or left. I like the term “radical centrist”.

  6. You actually don’t know the FBI don’t record all deaths or all gun violence?
They also misclassify gun violence into differentccategories that reduce the real numbers. Police misclassify MOST officer involved shooting of insane as “suicide by cop” & encourage all L3 groups to do the same.
Anyone who has lost a friend to suicide (2/3rds of all gun deaths) knows it is both a violent crime AND a homicide…discounting them to juggle crime numbers is both disingenuous and a bold faced lie

    1. @Bud You should know that there is no such thing as “Gun Violence” just as there is no hammer violence knife violence ot hands and feet violence To put it plainly it’s just violence!

The Politically Correct term of Gun Violence has been adopted by the lame stream media for its shock value. Since then it has become a catch phrase that one dimensional regressive lieberals use to make a point.

Political Correctness is a manipulative tool employed by the left for centralizing power to end all debate on all subjects frowned upon by the one dimensional regressive lieberal left!! That way they needn’t have to have the means to defend their agenda just employ the standard deflective tools ingrained in the vacuum between their ears!!

Political Correctness is the antithesis/reciprocal of reality Those employing Political Correctness are COWARDS afraid to face reality!!!

Politically correct language… is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.

Wiley’s Dictionary Silence the logical conclusion of politically correct speech.

  7. Boy, I wish I had a good suggestion as to how we could wide promulgate this decades long trend. Those of us who read Professor John R. Lott, Jr’s “More Gun Less Crime” over ten years ago know that, statistically, the increase in right to carry or “shall issue” laws parallel decreases in crime. Quite a few academicians and gun hater groups have funded “studies” that purport to debunk the data and conclusions in Professor Lott’s book. The professor has easily proven all such attempts to be statistically inaccurate.

I guess my only suggestion germane to the question is that since emotion is the primary weapon the gun grabbers use, that those of us who believe that our ability to defend ourselves and others is literally sacrosanct, should also be ready with the 1000’s of true stories where either a gun was fired and an evil doer is either dead or in jail while attempting to rape or steal or perform a violent home invasion.
