New Product Round Up — SHOT Day 4

The SHOT Show (Shooting Hunting Outdoor Trade) in Las Vegas is enormous to say the least. The show runs for four days. If you wanted to walk the show floor and visit every booth, you would have about eight seconds at each! While we cannot see it all, we spent plenty of time softening the shoe leather to come up with Day 4’s list of cool new products.

New Rifles for 2018 — SHOT Show Edition

There was little doubt that 2018 is going to be a gun worthy year. Savage Arms alone launched about 100 new models. Weatherby announced that is is done with California and plans to pull up stakes and set roots in the gun-friendly state of Wyoming. Perhaps the most exciting news for many was the announcement of a gun that does not really belong in the Rifles section. However, it is essentially an AR-15 with a 11.5-inch barrel and standard collapsable stock that the ATF does not classify as a rifle or a shotgun! That means no tax stamp or NFA requirements. Read the full details later this week in a future edition of The Shooter’s Log.

Flat, Hard Hitting, and Accurate: Weatherby Releases 6.5-300

The plan was to take my wife on a romantic getaway up the coast of California. Mother nature had other plans, though. A rockslide consisting of millions of cubic feet of mountain had not only covered U.S, Highway 1, it added over 15 acres to the California coastline by filling in the ocean. What to do? Looking on the map, I noted that the detour route would take us right through Paso Robles, California—home of the last and arguably most storied firearm manufacturer in the state, Weatherby Rifles.

SHOT Show 2014 Special Edition Day 4: New Shotguns

Cheaper Than Dirt! staffers covering the 2014 SHOT Show in Las Vegas have filed their final reports on new shotguns introduced at the show. This edition details Remington’s expanded VersaMax line, and two new 870 shotguns in the Tactical line. Also, Weatherby has a new SA-08 28-Gauge Deluxe, more  WBY-X shotguns, and a semi-auto version of the PA-459—the SA-459 Black Reaper. Winchester’s 2014 entries include the SX3 12-gauge 3.5-inch Long Beard turkey gun and a new offering in the SXP pump shotgun line, the Field Compact.

Truly Tactical and Versatile: Weatherby’s PA-459 is Threaded for Chokes

“Every person who enters any house, room, apartment, tenement, shop, warehouse, store, mill, barn, stable, outhouse, or other building, tent, vessel… with intent to commit grand or petit larceny or any felony is guilty of burglary,” reads California Penal Code 459.

Federal law does not only protect the right to self-defense, but it is also our God-given right to defend ourselves and our property from someone immediately attempting to commit a felony. If that day were to ever happen, I want to make sure I have the correct tools to protect myself.

A First Shotgun

I will never forget the first shotgun I ever fired. It was a Beretta Companion, a single shot 20 gauge that folded entirely in half and weighed next to nothing. It was a full-size gun; no recoil pad.

At the Range: Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 Deluxe

A friend recently bought a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 Deluxe rifle chambered in 257 Weatherby Magnum, and since I was setting up a used Vanguard 308 Win. of my own, I offered to scope and point-blank zero his rifle at the same time as I was doing mine. As it turned out, I was beguiled by the looks of his rifle, so I started with it, making the Deluxe 257 the first Weatherby I’ve ever shot extensively.

Top 10 Meat-producing Sluggers for Under $500

As the suburbs continue to encroach on deer habitat, game departments have become more restrictive about which bang sticks hunters may use when hunting in the deer woods. Whether you are looking to extend your season beyond archery and muzzleloader, or if sticks and strings and front stuffers are simply not what you are looking for, buying a slug gun does not have to break the bank.

Consider a Shotgun for Your First Firearm

If you’re thinking about buying that first gun, but are not sure which way you should go, consider the shotgun. Since its early days, the shotgun filled several roles, as it does today. It remains the only firearm capable of fulfilling nearly all functions of a gun, with very few exceptions.
