SHOT Show 2014 Special Edition Day 3: New Optics

Cheaper Than Dirt! staffers covering the 2014 SHOT Show in Las Vegas have filed third-day reports on new optics introduced at the show. The big challenge for a shooter these days is matching the right optic to the right firearm at the right price. Fortunately, manufacturers have been busy adding features to lower-end models to make them more appealing to a broader range of shooters. And at the top end, you’ll be able to find truly astonishing high-end glass. Here’s a look at new riflescopes, dot sights, lasers, and other optics coming this year.

SHOT 2014 — Kel-Tec’s New Bullpups the M43 and RDB

Earlier in January someone leaked a product sheet for two new Kel-Tec bullpup rifles named the RDB and M43. I heard Kel-Tec was pretty ticked off about the leak, but the flier circulated the gun blogs quickly. I wondered if maybe Kel-Tec was mad because the rifles didn’t exist, but sure enough, Kel-Tec unveiled prototypes of the M43 and RDB at SHOT Show 2014.

SHOT 2014 — Beretta ARX-100 Sporting Rifle

At the 2014 SHOT Show Media Day, I got the opportunity to fire a few rounds through Beretta’s ARX-100, the civilian version of the ARX-160 rifle developed for the Italian military. At first glance, I thought it was just another black sporting rifle. However, in true Beretta fashion, they painstakingly included some features that I consider a requirement on modern weapons systems.

SHOT 2014 — Kahr CT 40 and CT 45

Known for reliable, tough pocket pistols in a price range that reflects their quality, a Kahr goes bang every time. For self-defense, you can trust your life on a Kahr handgun. Now, with a saturated market of affordable and even cheap, small defensive handguns, Kahr Arms introduces two new full-sized pistols that it hopes will grab a portion of the market share.

However, as thousands of booths start bleeding together and your stack of business cards becomes unmanageable, it’s only the truly innovative ideas that end up sticking out in your mind. For me, the Laser Devices Mk7 Battle Light was one of them.

SHOT 2014 — Smith & Wesson Performance Center 460 XVR

The Smith & Wesson name is synonymous with quality revolvers, and with good reason. We got a chance to get a close-up look at Smith & Wesson’s booth at the 2014 SHOT Show and were treated with a huge wall of Performance Center eye candy. An unassuming wheel gun caught my eye that could get just about any job done.

Getting up before dawn isn’t hard when you know you will be spending all day shooting the newest and coolest rifles, shotguns and handguns while also getting to check out the latest in bullets, optics and other accessories. We spent all day at 2014’s Industry Day at the Range going from booth to booth testing out the latest and greatest gear. At the end of the day, it didn’t take us long to come to a consensus which firearms were our favorites.

SHOT 2014 — The Taurus 85 View

Though I like pink, I believe I speak for many women who love firearms—even though we appreciate manufacturers giving us products designed with us in mind, we’re kind of tired of pink. Enter the brand new Taurus 85 View—a very tiny snub-nosed .38 Special +P-rated concealed carry revolver.
