SHOT 2013: Firebird Precision Akdal MKA 1919 Shotgun 3-Gun Modification

By CTD Suzanne published on in 3-Gun, Customizing, Firearms, SHOT Show, Shotguns

Firebird Precision tricks out Saiga shotguns to meet the specific needs of 3-gun competitors. However, they found the Turkish-made Akdal MKA 1919 semi-automatic shotgun is not only easier to modify, but also more reliable. On Media Day, we found the modified 1919 is a lightweight gun with not a lot of hard-hitting recoil.

The Akdal MKA 1919 is a 12-gauge, gas-operated semi-automatic shotgun that resembles an AR-15. It is magazine-fed and has the same controls as the M4 or an AR-15. The safety selector, bolt release, and magazine release are all in the same positions as an AR-15. Below the barrel of the Akdal MKA 1919 is a gas-operated piston. The shotgun has a 19.7-inch barrel, a 3-inch chamber, an A2-style polymer stock and is 37.25 inches overall. Though the shotgun comes with a five-round magazine, Firebird Precision outfits the 1919 with a 10-round magazine.

The company starts by re-machining the 1919’s lower receiver, gas system guide rod and the barrel to convert the shotgun. Because the shotgun has a U.S.-made receiver, parts do not have to comply with import regulations (992R). Therefore, higher capacity magazines and adjustable stocks are compliant. Firebird Precision manufactures all magazines and parts in the United States.

Anyone have exerience with them? I know the .410 has been on the market for a bit but haven’t heard good or bad on them. The Saiga is over the top popular and is an AK. Is this like Ruger’s modified 10-22 looking like an AR? What shotgun is the action based on? I’ve seen them but haven’t shot one. I’ve used a Benelli M-4 for work and they are fine. A detachable 10 round mag is a plus. Someone chime in please…

The Akdal MKA 1919 is a stand alone system that looks like an AR, but is a dedicated system all of its own. I shot it at the range, both popping off rounds as fast as i could like a 3-gunner and busting a few birds “skeet style” just to see how the gun performed at distance. Both tests confirmed the MKA 1919 has a lot of promise. The problem with the Saigas was the tolerance differences from the factory. Gunsmiths might need a few hours or 15 to 20 hours to bring them up to snuff for 3-gun—it was/is all the luck of the draw.
The action o fthe MKA 1919 is comparable to a Remington 1100, the recoil was about average. Firebird Precision is also coming out with an extended mag that will hold 15 rounds. Stay tuned for a more in-depth review soon. ~ CTD Dave Dolbee

EdH- The Akdal MKA 1919 is based on a Remington 1100 action.

Just a reminder that virtually all repeating shotguns are “magazine fed.” Pump, auto, or lever.
