Firebird Precision tricks out Saiga shotguns to meet the specific needs of 3-gun competitors. However, they found the Turkish-made Akdal MKA 1919 semi-automatic shotgun is not only easier to modify, but also more reliable. On Media Day, we found the modified 1919 is a lightweight gun with not a lot of hard-hitting recoil.
The Akdal MKA 1919 is a 12-gauge, gas-operated semi-automatic shotgun that resembles an AR-15. It is magazine-fed and has the same controls as the M4 or an AR-15. The safety selector, bolt release, and magazine release are all in the same positions as an AR-15. Below the barrel of the Akdal MKA 1919 is a gas-operated piston. The shotgun has a 19.7-inch barrel, a 3-inch chamber, an A2-style polymer stock and is 37.25 inches overall. Though the shotgun comes with a five-round magazine, Firebird Precision outfits the 1919 with a 10-round magazine.
The company starts by re-machining the 1919’s lower receiver, gas system guide rod and the barrel to convert the shotgun. Because the shotgun has a U.S.-made receiver, parts do not have to comply with import regulations (992R). Therefore, higher capacity magazines and adjustable stocks are compliant. Firebird Precision manufactures all magazines and parts in the United States.
