Well, if the 1911 fits you, it is a great single action auto-loader It does not fit me, sadly. My choice is the Walther P-38. However, that said, it is all about practice, practice and more practice. Like everything else in life you want to become good at…like fly fish casting. Us kids used to practice on the front lawn for hours.

All this “preaching to the choir” is depressing me. Instead of wasting your time and mine ranting about the same crud to the same audience, do something constructive. Rather than acting like a angry jerk, I make a point of inviting any non-shooters that I meet to join me at the range as my guest. I have no idea how many converts I’ve made, but I’ve been present as three bought their first guns.

Jerry makes the point that a trained and practiced handgun shooter can be awesomely effective at short range. As a USPSA competitor, I have long contended that our Marines and soldiers should be taught to use a handgun like this. A .45 ACP pistol used by a shooter with even half of Jerry Miculek’s ability would be overwhelmingly effective in close quarters combat. How about it, Jerry? How about working with the Marine Corps to set up CQB handgun shooting training as a normal part of Marine marksmanship training? Given recent trends in military combat missions to involve urban combat, such training would be invaluable. I understand that the Marine Corps recently ordered 1911 style .45 ACP handguns. Now, all they need is the right training on how to use them. YOU could provide that training. Semper Fi!
