Top Cops Opposing Concealed Carry — Did yours make the list?

By Dave Dolbee published on in Concealed Carry, General

Police Chiefs, Sheriffs, Constable, or Commissioner — It really does not matter what you call them, they are still the top cop within the department and answerable to the citizenry. In some jurisdictions, the Chief of Police or Sheriff has a significant amount of input or the final determination of whether or not an individual can obtain a concealed carry permit or class III weapon. Although most of would agree this is already a right under the Second Amendment, it is the situation we currently live under.

During a recent meeting of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, more than a few of these bureaucrats showed their true colors when they signed on to a letter which expressed their opposition to H.R. 38/S. 446 – Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. The letter was adopted by 473 officials across the nation.

As the NRA-ILA correctly pointed out:

The list of supporters includes officials from states that either already recognize the permits of all other states or do not require a permit to exercise the Right-to-Carry. As out of state permit holders are already allowed to carry within these states, the officials’ actions only serve to curtail the rights of their residents.

In short, the following officials have abandoned their constituents in order to curry favor from out-of-state political interests:

Contrary view. I carry with permit. I also respect law enforcement professionals, hardly a bunch of liberal gun grabbers. Maybe we should listen to and repect their viewpoint. Even if we decide to disagree.

I am surprised so many from Tennessee small rural towns are on this list. I know the one from my county and I will confront him about it.

The opinion of Police Chiefs and their organizations should be summarily dismissed as the garbage that it usually is. Police Chiefs are usually appointed by city governments, and as such, they are not directly answerable to the electorate. County Sheriffs are usually directly elected by the county residents, and more often represent the actual views of the county residents.

All of these people and politicians want background checks, BUT what we really need is a background check for anyone running for office! If they don’t believe in and will uphold the Constitution they shouldn’t even be allowed to run!!

Glad to see no top cops in Pa. signed that ridiculous letter.

PA is not listed above because PA does not honor licenses from every other state. Most states, yes, but not all. The list above only represents states who honor all other licenses, hence national reciprocity changes nothing for them.

So many people here aren’t understanding that.

Police chiefs are appointed/selected by the municipality’s city council and city manager and are ‘at will’ employees. As such they are subject to firing without cause if they don’t operate at ‘the will’ of the municipality. The point being, they may agree with reciprocity, but their city may not. County Sheriffs are elected, which is why you see more of them speaking freely.

It should be no different than drivers licenses that are accepted in every state. The 2nd amendment is not to be infringed yet that is all they do and if those sheriffs cannot handle the job then step down and let someone that can.
